John Sumner Sargent

January 11, 1936 - December 6, 2025

John (“Jack”) Sumner Sargent, recently of Battlement Mesa, CO, died peacefully on
December 6, 2025 in Salt Lake City, UT, in the loving care of his family.

John was born in Los Angeles, CA on January 11, 1936 to William H. (“Bill”) and Louise B. Sargent. He attended Loyola High School, UCLA (BS
Engineering) and USC (MS Engineering).  He married Barbara F. Baker in 1959, who was the loving mother of his 4 children, divorcing in 1978. He married Tineke Witjes in 1980, and they divorced in 1999.

John had a successful career in aerospace, defense and energy sectors with North American Aviation, TRW, Honeywell and Aspen Engineering,
working on the Gemini and Apollo manned spaceflight programs, offshore oil exploration positioning, and missile frigate systems for the Republic of Singapore, among his many projects. John traveled extensively, including living abroad in Bath, UK and Singapore as well
as long time residence in Edmonds and Mukilteo, WA before retiring to Western CO.

John was a loving father and grandfather and an avid outdoorsman, flyfisherman and skier. He loved exploring the rivers and mountains of
the West with his children and grandchildren, and visited Chile, New Zealand and many other destinations pursuing his passion for flyfishing.
He loved reading and cooking. He had a keen sense of humor, and was known for sharing many a good joke or pun. John was also active in Kiwanis and other charitable activities throughout his long life.

John is preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Sharon, Bill and Mike.  He is survived by his children Janet (Chris Johnson) (Port Orchard, WA), John Jr. (Elinor Hendriksen) (Salt Lake City, UT), Bill (Yvonne Oleson) (Santa Barbara, CA), Paul (Brook Hebert) (Encinitas, CA), and by grandchildren Megan, Michael, Emma, Matthew, Olivia and Colin.

A private memorial in John’s honor will be held by John’s family.

John’s family would like to extend special thanks to Capitol Hill Senior Living and Inspiration Hospice Care of Salt Lake City for their care and
support.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Utah Food Bank or another charity in his memory.
