Jonathan Wayne Jones Sr.
July 14, 1955 - March 12, 2021
Jonathan W Jones Sr. was born to Laura E. Jones and Charles H. Jones-Harding on July 14, 1955 in Baltimore, Maryland. He took the hands of his loved ones on the other side the morning of Friday, March 12, 2021.
Jonnie received his childhood education in the Baltimore City public schools and continued his education as an alumnus of Salt Lake Community College years later when moving to Utah. He loved to fish, tell stories, and watch his favorite sports teams. He enjoyed making people laugh, treating people like family and inspiring others to keep their faith because our Father in heaven loves us all. Jonnie enlisted in the US Army during the Vietnam War era as an Engineer. Basic in Ft Knox, KY, served domestically in Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, then abroad in Hassan Hamburg, Germany. Early in his civilian career he spent time as a correctional officer but mostly served as an Environmental Technician Lead at the University of Utah and Huntsman Cancer Institute for 25 years. Loved by family, an abundance of co-workers, and friends. He will truly be missed.
Surviving is his wife Detra Jones, children Jonathan Wayne Jones Jr., Deshawne Jackson, Erica Jackson adopted daughter, Kesha Houston and daughter-in-law Thea Hall-Jones. Jonnie also loved children from his past, Karen Woolford, Marshall Parker, Brandon Parker, Helena, and JJ. “Once a Jones, always a Jones!”
His sisters Charlotte Starks, Linda Jones, Gertrude Allen, Chana Harding, and his brother Marvin Draper, survive him.
Also surviving are sixteen grandchildren: Quincy Houston, Braxton Jones, Marquis Jackson, Christina Jones, Heaven Jones, Samya Jackson, Ameia Stringer, Lena Jones, Tiana Stringer, Zoriah Hall-Jones, Xavier Hall-Jones, Tariq Jackson, Deshawne Jackson Jr., Isaiah Hall-Jones, Angelica Jones, and Jonathan W. Jones III. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son Jonathan Jennings, brothers Jerome Jones, Charles Harding, Joseph Jones, Ronald Jones Sr., and a sister Margaret Draper.
A viewing will be on Sunday, March 21, 2021 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, SLC. Please call the funeral home at 801-474-9119 between the hours of 10:00 am and 4:00 pm to make a reservation to abide by social distancing guidelines. Masks are required. There will be a private family service which may be live streamed on Monday, March 22, 2021 at 11:00 am, by returning to this page where a “Watch Now” button will appear. I was very surprised and saddend to learn of Jon's passing. I worked with him for many years while he was working at the University Of Utah EVS department. We shared many laughs together. My condolences to the family, I know he will be greatly missed.
