Juan-Uinta Alcantar-Torres

July 14, 2017 - August 1, 2017

July 14th 2017, my son Juan-Uinta Alcantar-Torres, was born. He weighed 6lbs 9oz and measured 19in long. He was born healthy; strong & beautiful. A Champion baby in every way.
We took Uinta home after 4 days in the hospital, to a peaceful house 🏡 that we prepared with so much love for him. He was happy. Mom was happy & papa was happy. It was so beautiful. We had him for two nights of endless snuggles and baby voices and songs, we were blessed with laughter and so much joy, It was pure bliss. The moments after birth, the first months, they're the most precious. So much bonding goes on at the deepest levels of your being and soul.
Going into the morning hours of our second night with him, around 4am mama noticed jr was hot. We took his temp and Uinta had a fever. We rushed to St. Marx where he was born. They decided to send us to Primary Children's Hospital by the U. Them better equipped for treating a newborn.
He was diagnosed with a adenovirus. High fevers and body aches.  He was treated for it, & he made great progress for about a week, then he started to develop pneumonia. The next 48 hours were the scariest of my life
He was given a breathing tube machine to deal with pre respiratory failure. The pneumonia was taking his lungs and they had to act fast. He was hooked to a bigger machine soon after because the first wasn't keeping his oxygen level high enough.
In that same 24 hour time frame of being transferred to picu and dealing with so many different emotions we were pulled out of his bedside and told he had to go undergo emergency surgery to save his life. His lungs were failing fast and drs had to place jr under a ECMO machine, it simulates the function of your lungs with respiratory failure.
They place two tubes in your jugular artery in your neck, one with blood going out and the other going back in. It oxygenates your blood while removing harmful co2 levels.
My baby boy isn't  even a month old and is under life support.
The surgery was a success and he's currently under the help of the ecmo machine while his lungs rest and he gets better from the virus.

Drs met with Victoria & I to tell us that jr has made no progress and he's only gotten worse. At this point all of his vital organs are failing. His brain, heart, lungs, kidney & liver are all failing. today they told us they don't think he is going to make it.
The untangible odds within us all says other wise, my baby is still here and fighting despite all the odds. I know he has the strength to see it through, and if his time be done on this paradise, I know he will be in an even better world. Resting and growing into everything his soul is to be.

Me and Victoria woke up today, excited to go see our baby boy. Yesterday they told us they were giving him until today, Aug 1st to show signs of improvement.
We came to his bedside and Victoria continued to read him The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.
At about 10 am the doctors came to give us an update on jr. They told us that throughout the night his brain flatlined and failed. He passed away in his sleep.
