Kenneth Eschler Calder

Kenneth Eschler Calder passed away on June 13, 2016 at his home due to complications following a biopsy and surgery. He was surrounded by his loving family who was by his side during the last two months as he faced many medical difficulties. Kenneth is survived by his beloved wife Monique, daughters Christine (Leo), and Carolyne (John). His sweet grandchildren Tiffany (Jon), Justin (Sunnie), Camille, and Andrew. And four great grandchildren, Kyle, Liam, Ava, and Athena. He left behind many more family members and numerous friends who loved him dearly.

Ken was born on August 31, 1934 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He grew up the oldest of three children, born to Clement and Zula Calder. His brother Doug, and sister Kathy had many adventures growing up with Ken. Ken met the love of his life Monique in France, the two were married on May 12, 1958 in Lyon, France. Ken graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelors and Masters Degree in languages. He was a French professor at Westminster College and taught French at Brighton High School for 18 years. On many occasions his students would drop by to visit their favorite French teacher.

He served in the Marine Corp Reserve for 8 years during the early years of his marriage. He loved life and always had a great sense of humor. Ken and Monique traveled to France many times, some of their favorite places to visit were Egypt, Greece, Spain, Italy, and England. They took cruises to Norway, the Greek Isles, and Alaska. Ken had many hobbies, he was an incredible artist, creating beautiful acrylic paintings and pencil drawings discovering his love for art in 2005.

Ken loved camping and fishing with his wife and family. He was a talented drummer, enjoyed playing his organ, was always reading a good book, and attended many jazz concerts and movies. He took great pleasure at Christmas time decorating his home for the holidays. Ken was a wonderful example of someone who showed kindness to others. He was a gentle soul, was always willing to help anyone, and never expected anything in return. Our dear Ken will be loved and missed by everyone whose life he touched.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 18th at 1:00 PM at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City, where a viewing will begin one hour prior to services. Graveside service to follow at Wasatch Lawn Cemetery, 3401 S. Highland Dr., Salt Lake City.
