Kurtis Edward Mooney
May 28, 1947 - September 9, 2022
Our beloved father, grandfather, husband, brother, son, and friend passed away Friday, September 9th, 2022.
Kurtis (Kim) grew up in Salt Lake City, graduating from Skyline High School in 1965. He enlisted in the United States Marines at the start of the Vietnam War and honorably served his country. He attended Westminster College earning his bachelor’s degree in business and graduated in 1973. He married Kay Shelton and together they had four sons. Brandon (Summerly), Justin (Mistala), Troy and Michael. Kurtis was very proud of his four boys.
Kurtis later married Teresa Earl. They were married for over 30 years. Together they created a life they loved. They surrounded themselves with wonderful friends and because of their shared love of animals, many lucky dogs joined their family. They enjoyed traveling and had many great adventures together.
Kurtis was very creative and artistic. He had a lifelong passion and love of music. He played guitar and sang in a band in his high school years. He continued to play guitar throughout his life and his children and grandchildren have many cherished memories of him sharing his talent with them.
He also expressed himself in the art of Bonsai. He practiced and studied under the tutelage of a renowned Bonsai master in the Salt Lake valley. An active member and contributor to the Bonsai Club of Utah for many years, Kurtis became very accomplished in the creation and care of Bonsai's. Their beauty brought him a feeling of great joy and accomplishment.
Kurtis also loved to play the game of golf. Many of his best times were spent with friends and family on the golf course.
Kurtis was hard working, charismatic, and a great salesman, which lead him to become a successful entrepreneur and businessman. He was a strong, fun loving, gentle man and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
A celebration of life will be on Friday, September 16th, 2022, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City, Utah. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 17th at noon at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 1375 Spring Lane, Salt Lake City. Kurtis will be laid to rest following Mass at Mt. I too am so sorry for your loss. Kem and I were friends since he was 7 or 8 years old. I moved away from Utah in 1975 and we lost track of each other and recently moved back. I was searching the internet today and learned of his passing. He was a great human and I will miss him. Semiper Fi from a former Marine to a Brother and may God look over you Mrs. Mooney.
