Larry Dean Nelson

Larry Dean Nelson, 68, died on Sept. 25, 2014, in Salt Lake City from complications following recent back surgery. He was born on April 21, 1946, in Salt Lake City to his father, Keith Raymond Nelson, and his mother, Madelene Louise Mayo. As a student at Granite High School in South Salt Lake, Utah, he studied photography. Several of his photographs, including one of U.S. President John F. Kennedy visiting Utah in 1963, were published by local newspapers. He served from 1966 to 1969 as a U.S. Army staff photographer in the Vietnam War. He received a Bachelor’s degree with honors in sociology in 1972 from the University of Utah. He was a photographer with Saans Photography, and later, Busath Photography Inc. until his retirement. He also worked with the Utah local of the IATSE motion-picture projectionists’ union for many years. In retirement, he enjoyed his many friends, and several pet boa-constrictor and python snakes.
He is survived by his half-sisters Debra Maureen Nelson Myers (Scott) of Sandy, Utah, and Pamela Rae Nelson Davenport of Holladay, Utah; half-brothers David Keith Nelson of Millcreek, Utah, and James Theodore Nelson (Marianne) of West Jordan, Utah; and step-mothers Shirley Maureen Egli Nelson of Millcreek, Utah, and Geraldine McEwen Baker Nelson of Midvale, Utah. He is also survived by several nephews, nieces, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A viewing will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2014, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City, with interment at the Murray City Cemetery on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014.
