Larry Erin Grant

December 4, 1945 - December 27, 2024

Larry Erin Grant was born in San Francisco in 1945 and was adopted by Larry (Lazarus) and Bernice Howard Grant. Larry enjoyed playing baseball starting in little league through high school. Larry always loved his native San Francisco, remaining a loyal fan to the 49ers, and most especially any Ghirardelli chocolate.

In 1963, he moved to Salt Lake City and attended Westminster College and then transferred to the University of Utah until he was drafted into the Army at the onset of the Vietnam war. He found himself stationed in Ft. Bliss, El Paso Texas where he was tasked with manning a Nike nuclear bomb silo. Fortunately he was never sent overseas and spent his military service in relative safety. During his time with the Army he was stationed in Texas, Missouri and California. Larry and Ann Gleave married in 1966 and later divorced in 1994. Their first daughter Katherine Ann (Van Lent) was born in 1969 while they were living in Canoga Park, California. A second daughter Rebecca Erin (McIntyre) was born in 1980 and completed their family. After his military service he began a career in finance. Larry was involved in the initial opening of Foothill Financial and at the time of retirement he was the Executive Vice President at Centennial Bank. After retirement he consulted for Holladay Bank & Trust.

Larry adored dogs and always had a canine companion. As he got older he chose to adopt elderly dogs to give them a loving home in their final years, making sure there was an endless supply of cheeseburgers. He left behind his latest canine love General Ulysses S. (Gus) Grant. Larry was an avid golfer, fisherman, cook, reader, gardener, and traveler, and never turned down a good dark rum. He was lucky to see his beloved Los Angeles Dodgers win another World Series in 2024. Family Sunday dinners were his love language and he was always working on ways to get his daughters to like seafood. Another daughter, Nicole Ann (Bird Berlin-Steiman), was discovered nearly 7 years ago through Ancestry DNA, growing his family exponentially. Larry was diagnosed with Parkinson Disease in 2014 and fought a courageous battle with it.

Larry is survived by his daughters, sons-in-law Samuel Steiman and Stephen McIntyre, granddaughters Corbin Hannah Van Lent, Ivie Montgomery Van Lent, Emma Olivia Van Lent, grandsons Nathan Samuel (Gene) Berlin, Jacob William (Bryana) Berlin, Alexander Benjamin Berlin, Nathan David Steiman, Joseph Adam Steiman, and great granddaughter Genevieve Ruth Berlin. Those who knew Larry will remember his wit and dry sense of humor, always ready with a wry come back. His presence is deeply missed by everyone who loves him, but we know he is fattening up the dogs he has been reunited with.

We invite you to gather to celebrate Larry’s life on January 11, 2025 4:00 – 6:00 pm at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East. Guests are encouraged to use the parking and entrance located on the north side of the building. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Humane Society of Utah or the Parkinson’s Foundation in his name.

In Loving Memory

I met Larry in 1982 while he was at Foothill Thrift. We worked together on many projects until his retirement. He was a consummate professional in business. He was knowledgeable in every aspect of finance which always worked to the benefit of his employer. He was thorough, attentive to detail, and ethical. But his greatest asset, as a businessman and as a friend, was his loyalty. We were good friends. We would frequently sit at a local pub and discuss the problems of the world. He would nurse a Myers and Coke and convey his wisdom whether I needed it or not. I loved him. I visited him a few days before he passed, and he was still Larry. He wanted to know about my world and told me about his plans for the future. My heart goes out to his family. Marv Adamson

Larry was a close friend for over 43 years and someone who could be very funny (I loved his laugh), sometimes a little caustic, or very serious and always full of good advice or opinions. We shared some great times together, and he left me with good memories. I will miss him as will many others! My deepest condolences to Katie, Beckie, and the whole family.

Nikki, I was so sorry to hear of your fathers passing. I know that he had been ill for many years, but it is never easy to say goodbye. You were both fortunate to have each other the last few years. Please know that we are thinking of you. Peggy & Phil
