Larry T. Evans
September 3, 1936 - April 16, 2022
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Larry Evans on Saturday, April 16th, 2022. He was an amazing man with more lives than a cat but sadly, on this day, his journey on earth ended.
Larry was born on Sept 3rd, 1936, in Salt Lake City to Lawrence Winter and Bertha Thurgood Evans. He was the only boy and the youngest of three children. Larry graduated from South High in 1956. After
graduating, he served four years in the Army National Guard. He was employed by Mountain Fuel where he worked for 33 years until his retirement in 1991. This was also where he made many lifelong friendships that he cherished.
Larry was a lover of all sports. Whether playing or watching sports, it was one of his favorite pastimes. He was very athletic in all sports, but golf was his favorite! He was an unbelievable, consistent golfer. The golf course was his happy place. Larry rarely missed a sports game of his grandchildren. All the kids on the various teams knew and adored “Big Lar.” He also enjoyed bowling on the Goof Ball League where they frequently took first place. He had played rec basketball for many years. This is where he met Judie in February of 1986. They married later that year.
The family bought University of Utah football tickets in 1987. Larry rarely missed a game until his legs weren’t strong enough to make the walk from the tailgate lot to the stadium. He loved Utah Football! Enough so that he sported a Ute tattoo on his calf.
Larry and Judie loved to travel, especially cruises. They had many amazing memories of good times on the ocean or the lake with friends and family. They had a trailer at Echo Reservoir for many years. Their trailer, the “Hillbilly Hilton” was the place to be at Echo where everyone was welcome to join in on a great time with Larry.
Larry loved all kinds of animals, and they worked him tirelessly. None of his dogs ever missed a walk. The newest addition, Dusti Lin would wake Larry up in the middle of the night to go outside. Larry would cave in every time. He would get on his riding scooter and take Dusti all around the condo complex. He made many friends on his scooter adventures with Dusti.
Larry had a kind, gentle soul. He loved and was loved by anyone who was fortunate enough to know him. He was as solid of a guy as they come and would do anything for anyone at any time. For a man with a bad heart, he had the biggest heart ever! He will be dearly and deeply missed by many.
Larry is survived by his wife of 35 years, Judie, and by his children and grandchildren, Mark & Sharie Evans (Autumn, Aubrie, Tyson, Gavin, Alysha, Aija), Todd & Angi Evans (Kennedi, Riker, Mallari), Michelle & Bret Layton (Parker) and Veronica & Gary Zane (Brayden, Adam). He was also graced with 8 great grandchildren. He is survived by his older sister June Ahern and is preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Gloria.
Larry was the oldest LVAD patient in the State of Utah. The family would like to send their sincere gratitude to the entire LVAD team at Intermountain Heart & Lung Center and a special thank you to Dr. Abdallah Kfoury, MD. They, along with the at home care and love Judie gave Larry every day, granted Larry another 7 years on the golf course. He was also able to see the U of U Football team win the PAC12 Championship! We all know Lar loved his Utes!
A “Utah Ute” style celebration of life will be held at Starks Funeral Parloron April 28th, 2022 from 6-8pm. Guests are asked to park on the north side. Please wear your favorite Ute Gear, Red, or casual attire to celebrate one last tailgate for “Big Lar.”
