Lewis S. Franck Jr. (Buddy)

March 14, 1947 - January 25, 2025

Lewis S. Franck Jr. (Buddy) passed away on January 25th, 2025 unexpectedly in Salt Lake City, Utah.  He was born in Louisiana, USA. He was preceded in death by his father, mother and sister and is survived by his lovely wife, Meredith Anderson Franck, his daughter Johanna, his son Sebastian, daughter-in-law Maria, and beloved grandson Roman “Ray of Sunshine”and many other extended family members and loved ones. Buddy was a great human being – husband, father, parent, friend, and grandpa (papa). He is missed greatly by all those who knew and loved him.

By the time Lewis was ten months old he had traveled to varies parts of the USA and abroad. He continued to do this throughout his life with his current wife, Meredith. They continued their trips together for the next fifty years as a family. He was a humble man with numerous accomplishments both great and small. When he was young, he studied acting and would linger to read the credits of old and contemporary films.  He also loved to read and was a devoted patron of the public library.  He always had two or three books by his bedside.

He retired from Salt Lake Criminal Justice Division after 30 years of service. His compassion was felt by the clients he assisted who were troubled by the challenges of life. He noted that his participation in co-teaching Art Expression classes with his wife was the key to healing and a path forward. He had a passion for photography and would shoot as many as three rolls of film a week, often testing out new camera equipment and methods. He was a prolific writer but would say, “I prefer to write in light with a camera” He had a vast collection of antique film and digital cameras. He would give photos and cameras to students who displayed his passion for capturing the moment with photography. Buddy was a generous human being.

Buddy’s fields of interest were in film history, ethical theory, philosophy of religion, and moral development and education. He taught seniors in Sunday School at Holy Trinity for approximately twenty years. He would often say that all one needs to know to get through life with joy and a deep understanding of life comes from the Beatitudes and the Sermon of The Mount. He would often comment that the greatest suffering came from disconnecting and dying unloved. His last words to his wife were, “I loved so many people, and I am loved.”

A viewing will be on Thursday, January 30 from 6-8 PM at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 279 South 300 West, Salt Lake City. Funeral Mass will be celebrated the following day, Friday, January 31 at 11 AM at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. He will be laid to rest, following mass, at Mount Olivet Cemetery, 1342 East 500 South, Salt Lake City.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Holy Trinity Greek Cathedral of Salt Lake City, 279 South 300 West, Salt Lake City, Ut.

Rest in peace, Buddy. May His Memory be Eternal.

My heart is sadden to hear Buddy has left us. I worked with Buddy at CJS, he was always willing to visit and gave me the benefit of his life experiences. He was especially kind by sharing coffee and tips to make the perfect pot to survive the workday. I wish him rest and am thankful I had the opportunity to have known him in this life. Ms. Frank, please accept my condolences and let me know how I may help you.

I met Buddy while working at Allen's Camera. Nothing made me happier than nerding out with him about cameras. He was beyond passionate about everything he talked about, he left a lasting impression on me and has undoubtedly inspired me to continue learning about something I love, photography. Thanks Buddy. I'll miss you.
