Lois Morton Laine
November 27, 1929 - March 24, 2017
Lois, our beloved "Nons" or "Ma" to many people, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2017. Lois was born November 27, 1929 to Harry Morton and Lucille Drufke in Chicago, Illinois. She married Eugene Laine on October 13, 1951 in Chicago at St. Mary of the Angels Catholic Church. Lois was a dog lover, Anglophile, master of crossword puzzles, opera fan, lover of Native American folk art, cook, and maker of delicious desserts. She absolutely loved to plan and entertain for friends and large family clan gatherings. Cheesecake for fifty, no problem!
Being raised by Ma was a wonderful experience. Childhood was a never-ending field trip of museums, art festivals, movies, and travel, never missing out on a learning experience. She treated her children like adults and encouraged all to be free thinkers. Ma's enthusiasm for history and the great mysteries of life were contagious and have been passed down to her children, grandchildren, and everyone in her large extended family.
A graduate of Loyola and Northeastern Illinois universities, Lois had a varied nursing career that included public health nursing, surgical nursing, discharge planning, home health, hospital supervisor, director of nursing, long term care administrator, and was a Certified Rehab Nurse specializing in quality assurance education and programs. She loved when JCAHO showed up at the door! Lois was involved in Utah State committees for long term care, a member of the National Association of Directors of Nursing Administration, Utah Association of Long Term Care Directors, Utah Health Care Association, and received an honorary nursing award from the THETA TAU nursing society. In Utah, Lois left her mark at Wasatch Villa, Hillhaven, Applegate Home Health and, in retirement, was a volunteer at St. Mark's Hospital, the Utah Museum of Natural History, and kept the Utah Geological Survey stocked with homemade lemon squares. Lois always said if she didn't have a nursing career she would been an anthropologist and raised Shetland sheepdogs.
Preceded in death by her husband Eugene Laine in 1987. Survived by son Michael (Roxanne) Laine; daughter Beth (Gerry) Satterlee; grandson Christopher (Michelle) Laine; granddaughter Alison (Reiko Turner) Satterlee; and great grandsons Michael and Andrew Laine.
The family wishes to thank the caring staff of Highland Care Center, where she resided for the past one and a half years. Special thanks to Encompass Hospice, Dr. Kalva, Dr. Rebecca Moore, and St. Mark's Hospital Emergency Department and Stroke Program.
Please join the family for a celebration of Lois' life on Friday, May 5, 2017, from 6pm-8pm at the Starks Funeral Parlor located at 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City. Complimentary valet parking provided on the south side of the building.
