Lon Rodney Kump
"Rod"

Lon Rodney Kump passed away on November 3, 2015 in Salt Lake City. He was born December 12, 1928 in Salt Lake City to Lon and Bernice Knowlden Kump.

Rod graduated from East High School in 1947 and went on to graduate from the University of Utah in 1951 where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. Rod valued the power of education and respected the pursuit of knowledge, two traits that distinguished him throughout his life. Rod served as an officer onboard a U.S. Navy destroyer, USS Uhlmann, during the Korean War. Always a proud Utah alum, Rod found happiness each season cheering on Utah’s teams and often supported the athletic program with season tickets.

On June 29, 1953 Rod married Carolyn Beal and moved to California to begin their life together. Carolyn taught second grade while Rod further pursued his education and attended Stanford Law School. After graduating from law school the Kumps returned to Salt Lake City where Rod’s law career began with the firm Richards, Bird & Kump. He felt fortunate to find a profession that he loved, making connections to people and the community he respected deeply. Rod's work ethic instilled this passion in the generations of family he leaves behind. Rod’s accomplishments will remain an inspiration for years to come.
Beyond the office, Rod loved many things, most of all his family and nature. Whether he was fishing, skiing, hiking or camping, he found peace and comfort in the outdoors, especially when shared with those he loved. After his time with the Navy, Rod loved to travel whenever possible, especially to historical landmarks that enriched his mind and heart. Rod’s joy of reading, literature, and theater helped him feel connected to the world beyond himself. As an only child, Rod felt very fortunate to have a large family. Rod lived his life with dignity, grace, devotion, and intelligence that will forever be remembered, and carried on by those who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife Carolyn; daughters Lisa (Bruce), Marianne (Brad), Kathryn (Brent), Jennifer (Richard); one son Rodney (Jonalee); nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 7th at 12:00 PM at the Parleys 3rd Ward, 2625 East Stringham (2295 South), Salt Lake City, where a visitation will begin at 10:30 AM.

In Loving Memory

So sorry for your loss. I remember your family and think of you when I drive by the old neighborhood. Your dad and mom were always so kind to us. God bless you with lots of fond memories during this time of grieving.

We were saddened to hear of Rod's passing. Our hearts, love, thoughts and prayers go out to Carolyn, their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. We will never forget the quiet cousin and friend who hosted, along with Carolyn, so many Knowlden family reunions. Thank you so much for keeping the extended family together. We will miss Rod. He certainly was a giant of a man and a great example of love and kindness.

Dear Carolyn: Don't know if you remember me. I went to Murray a year after you. I am so sorry for your loss and I am sure your sweet husband will sorely be missed by you and family. I'm glad you have your children to assist you through this hard time. I lost Sherm 5 years ago in January. It's been a terrible adjustment and very lonely, but we should be happy we had them as long as we did. We had celebrated our 60th anniversary. Know I am thinking of you. Dawna Davies

Dear Carolyn, My deep condolences to you and your family on the loss of your partner in life. I only met your husband briefly but reading his obituary, he accomplished much and I know he was still doing legal work until recently.
