Lucille Zaelit
October 21, 1928 - October 23, 2022
Our loving aunt, Lucille Zaelit, peacefully passed away on October 23, 2022, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Lucille was a retired U.S. Foreign Service staff officer.
She was born on October 21, 1928, in Salt Lake City, Utah, daughter of Michael and Sophia Zaelit.
Lucille graduated from West High School, at the young age of 16, received her BA at the University of Utah, and worked on her Master’s Degree at UCLA, in Los Angeles. Also, while living in Los Angeles she worked for two couturieres and an advertising agency. In 1956, she moved to Washington, DC to work in the Department of State until 1960 when she transferred to the US Foreign Service, at which time she had her first assignment overseas at the American Embassy San Salvador, El Salvador. Her subsequent tours of duty were at the American Embassies in New Delhi, India, Copenhagen, Denmark, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Canberra, Australia, London, England, US Liaison Office, Peking, China, US NATO Office, Brussels, Belgium, and US Consulate General, Hong Kong. After her tours in Malaysia and London she served assignments in the State Department in Washington, D.C.
Her life was filled with many, many wonderful experiences, and adventures. Lucille worked with numerous distinguished people, Ambassadors, Consuls General, and even George H. W. Bush, before he was president. She enjoyed and loved being with her family, and they loved being with her. She will be truly missed.
Lucille is preceded in death by her parents and nine siblings, Joe (Virginia), Lou (Florence), Ernest, Adele (Lester), Emily, Marie (Dilver), Tom (Rachel), Edna, John (Margie). She is survived by many nieces and nephews. We would also like to thank all the caregivers who provided care for Lucille, this past year.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, SLC, on Wednesday, November 2, 2022, from 7:00-9:00pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at the Cathedral of the Madeleine Catholic Church, 331 East South Temple, on Thursday, November 3, 2022, at 12:30pm. Interment to follow at Mt. Calvary, 4th Avenue “T” Street.
