Lucy Breen Jenkins

Lucy Breen Jenkins of Sandy City, Utah left for her next adventure on Saturday, April 8th, 2023 surrounded by her family, while listening to her favorite memories. Lucy was preceded in death by her mother, Maebelle, her father, Robert, and her sister, Joanne. She is survived by her husband, Tom, her sisters, Julie and Barbara, her children, Roy and Annie, and her faithful dog, Sophie.

Lucy was a voracious hiker, an avid skier, and an insatiable reader, but she loved nothing more than her family. She was a born naturalist, and never stopped learning about the wildflowers, birds, mountains, and stars. She was the world’s ultimate explorer, and the only thing she liked as much as an adventure was planning the next one. Lucy was the most dedicated mother, devoted wife, loving sister, and caring daughter. She always put her family first, except on the trail, where she always led the way. She was a master of balancing the different elements of life; nurturing a rewarding career while creating a healthy family and a joyful existence.

Lucy was born in Savannah, Georgia on September 8, 1953 to Maebelle Breen and Robert Jenkins. She grew up in Owego, New York with her three sisters, learning to ski at Greek Peak Mountain Resort in central New York and spending her summers on the beach at St. Simons Island, Georgia. She received her Regents diploma from Owego Free Academy in 1971, her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1974, and her Juris Doctor from Brigham Young University in 1979. Lucy was an accomplished attorney in environmental law, energy and natural resources, and estate planning. She was a trailblazer and mentor for women attorneys in Utah and was a partner in the law firms of Parsons Behle & Latimer as well as Jones Waldo Holbrook & McDonough. In 2010 and 2011 she was named one of the top energy and natural resource lawyers in Utah. She was a board member of Friends of Alta, the Snowbird Sports Education Foundation, and Habitat for Humanity of Salt Lake Valley.

Lucy, we’ll hear you in the birds, see you in the wildflowers, and feel you in the wind. We’ll visit you in the verdant mountain meadows where the lupine whispers your name and the Indian paintbrush draws memories of a life well lived. We’ll meet you on your favorite runs at Alta, in the gardens you taught us to care for, in the forests of longleaf pines and live oaks dripping with Spanish moss, and where the rhythm of the waves sculpt the broad beaches of St. Simons. Your beauty shines in the stars, your warmth in the Sun, your kindness in the alpenglow. We’ll feel your strength in the whitewater rapids, your passion in the powder, and your love wherever we go. You were an unstoppable force, had an infallible constitution, and a love for life that will continue to be felt in this world until the end of the universe itself.

Please join us in celebrating Lucy’s life on Saturday, June 24, 2023 from 1:00-5:00 PM at Our Lady of the Snows Center, 10189 E Hwy 210, Alta, Utah. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Snowbird Sports Education Foundation, the Huntsman Cancer Institute, the Utah or Georgia chapter of the Nature Conservancy, or Utah Open Lands in Lucy’s honor.
