Lula L. Harley Henry

October 23, 1921 - September 4, 2024

Our beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, Lula Harley Henry, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2024 in Salt Lake City. She was born to Lillie Hughes Miller Harley, and Alexander Harley on October 23, 1921 in Greenwood Mississippi. She is the last surviving member of her immediate family. In 1936, she married George Henry, and after completing his military service in WWII, they moved to Salt Lake City, and in 1946 united with Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. George passed away in 2001. At her passing, Lula was the longest and oldest surviving member of Calvary.

Lula was a devout Christian, and faithful member of Calvary. She served the church as the Director of Vacation Bible School, the Baptist Training Union, Financial Secretary, and the Missionary Society. She loved Calvary Baptist Church and dedicated her life to the work of the Church.

Lula was fiercely independent and remained in her home following the death of George Sr. She meticulously managed her own affairs. There was her way, and the wrong way. She will be remembered as a wonderful host, a fantastic cook, famous for sweet potato pie, and a concoction from the Great Depression, which she called “egg pie.” She was optimistic and devoted to God throughout the entirety of her life. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Lula is survived by her two sons, George Henry, Jr. (James Rose) and Ronald Curtis Henry and, Grandsons Shane Mathews and Corey Henry. Also, two goddaughters, Denise Gray Howard and Dwala Marie Gray Toombs, as well as numerous nieces nephews and cousins. Our family is deeply grateful for all the wonderful neighbors and health care workers who helped Lula remain in her home during the last years of her life.

Visitation for friends and family will be held on Monday, September 16, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City.

Funeral Services will be held at Calvary Baptist Church, 1090 South State Street, Salt Lake City on Tuesday, September 17 at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow. Pastor Oscar Moses, and Pastor Emeritus France A. Davis officiating.

Deepest sympathy to Cousin Lula's family from the Mississippi Miller Family. Fortunately, I was able to talk to her throughout the years and she shared valuable family history with me. She was faithful in keeping touch with us. May God's peace and comfort be with you all during this time. Love Ann, Booker T Miller's daughter.

It was always a delight to work with Sister Henry in Vacation Bible School at Calvary Baptist Church. She had a sweet spirit and a love for what she was doing. She also had a practice of giving gifts to participants. I will cherish many memories of her. Family, I am praying for you today and the days to come. God bless you.
