Malgorzata 'Margaret' Anna Szlek

Malgorzata (Margaret) Anna Szlek died peacefully on June 11, 2022, at her home. Margaret was born in Demblin, Poland, on August 12, 1958. She moved with her parents and three older brothers to Pulawy, Poland, when she was 13. After high school, she attended university and attained a Master’s in Biology. In 1987, Margaret had the opportunity to work at Utah State University for one year. Being adventurous, she took that opportunity and found herself in Logan, Utah. The one-year visa turned into three years as Margaret found the United Stated and Logan, Utah, a fun place to live. During those three years, Margaret me many lifelong friends and , by chance , met Larry Elkin, her future husband, at a New Year’s Eve party in Wellsville, Utah. Margaret and Larry were married in February 1989.

After acquiring the right to stay and work in the United States and moving to Salt Lake City. Margaret found employment at lomed, a medical research and development company in Salt Lake City. Margaret loved the work because it was challenging and exciting. This job allowed Margaret to work with clients worldwide and develop strong professional and personal relationships with her colleagues. Unfortunately, in 2008, the recession brought an end to her job.

In 1993, Margaret and Larry purchased a home, where Margaret’s love for gardening flourished. Margaret transformed the yard with one tree, on bush, and a dead lawn into a tranquil oasis. Roses were Margaret’s favorites, and soon there were many along with many trees. The yard was full of color, and Margaret received compliments from strangers walking by the house daily. Gardening was indeed Margaret’s gift and passion for making things grow.

Margaret and Larry filled their lives with many camping and fishing adventures. Margaret was a talented fly fisher; and enjoyed fly fishing from Mexico to the High Arctic and points in between.

During her life, Margaret made strong and long-lasting friendships. Margaret’s personality shone through with everyone she met. Margaret was a sweet, kind, gentle, and generous member of humanity. Her friends became her family here in this country and meant everything to her.

A viewing for Margaret will be on Saturday, June 25, 2022 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City. Guests are encouraged to park on the north side of our home. Following the viewing, everyone is welcome to join in the Celebration of Margaret’s life at Larry and Margaret’s home, which is one block away, at 3660 South Carolyn Street (1020 East) Millcreek, Utah 84106, for food, drinks, and expressions of their love for Margaret.
