Marc Douglas Smith

Marc Douglas Smith, 68, passed away at his home in West Valley City, Utah, on August 12, 2026, after a battle with Alzheimer’s dementia and heart-related health issues. He was surrounded by the place and people he knew and loved.

Marc was born September 23, 1957, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Ernest J. Smith and Florence Malff Jacobsen. In 1977, Marc joined the United States Navy and proudly served his country as a Navy veteran.

On July 28, 1990, Marc married Rita Marlene “Pinky” Smith. Together, they raised three children and built a life and family over the next 36 years. Marc and Pinky had recently celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary.

Marc spent more than 30 years working for Reid’s Concrete Service as a concrete form setter before beginning a new chapter with UTA in 2017. He formally retired from UTA in 2024, shortly after his Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

Marc was also incredibly proud of his 27 years of sobriety through Alcoholics Anonymous. His AA family and the friendships he made throughout his years of sobriety were an important part of his life.

He was a lifelong Cowboys fan, an avid reader and collector of books, a great bowler, and a lover of classic rock who could hold a pretty good tune himself. He was also the proud creator of the one and only “shiny holder of many things” — a creation that will undoubtedly make those who knew him smile.

Marc loved his family and his dogs, Pepper and Charlie, who held a special place in his heart as well.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Rita Marlene “Pinky” Smith; his children, Mark (Rian) Talbert, Damon “DJ” Talbert, and Felicia (Ronald) Bayes; his grandchildren, Carson, Parker, Caleb, Bella, and Boston; along with many brothers, sisters, extended family members, friends, and members of the AA community whose lives he touched throughout the years.

Marc was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest J. Smith and Florence Mclff Jacobsen.

The family would like to extend a special and heartfelt thank you to Marc’s hospice nurse Nikki, and his aide Carlos, with Symbii Home Health & Hospice, for the kindness, compassion, and care they gave Marc and for helping keep him comfortable during his final days.

A Celebration of Life will be announced once arrangements have been finalized.

Marc would have celebrated his 69th birthday next month. Though Alzheimer’s changed the final chapter of his life, it could never erase the life he lived, the family he built, the friendships he made, or the memories he leaves behind.
