Maria Bicos, our beloved ‘Mom', ‘Sister', ‘Thea Maria', ‘Yiayia', passed away peacefully at the age of 80 on Friday, December 27th.
Born in New York City on April 30, 1933 to Greek immigrants, Theodore and Kanella Anthony, and grew up in the Bronx with her sister/best friend, Andriana Bicos. Maria married Theodore Bicos on June 5, 1955 who preceded her in death. She is survived by her three children Tony Bicos, Theodora Haskins and Angela Simmonds; grandchildren Crystal Bybee, Nick Blain, Mitch Blain, and Ted Blain; great grandchildren Jonah and Malia Bybee. She was an amazing aunt and ‘second Mom' to her nieces and nephews who included Connie Pavlicas, Paula Mitchell and Christopher Pavlicas, Christina Rousakis, Maria Castricone, Tom Bicos and George Bicos, Angela Kiriklakis and James Bicos, as well as Angela Bicos and Andrew Bicos.
Maria began her career in banking and worked for many years using her bookkeeping skills which earned her great recognition. Later in life she was a District Marketing Manager for SPAR Marketing covering the Western US Region. Underlying her success in every role was her ability to draw people to her like moths to a flame with her great sense of humor. She was smart, fun and lived a full life enriched by the love of her family. She will be remembered and missed by all who crossed her path for being kind and generous. Maria was great; one of a kind. We are grateful to have had her in our lives.
The family would like to extend our gratitude to Maria's beloved physicians, including Dr. Yong Hui Ahn and her nurse Emily Thomas, Dr. Steven Rokeach, and Dr. Nick Mamalis who always made her laugh.
Friends and family may call on Thursday evening between 6-8 p.m. at Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church, 5335 Highland Drive, Salt Lake City. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her name to the Alzheimer's Association or to the Humane Society of Utah.
In Loving Memory
Maria made the world a better, happier place with her humor, wisdom, and compassion for others. Her family was her greatest treasure. She had so much spunk and enthusiasm, even at age 80, she was the "life of the party". It was an honor to be her friend. I will miss her dearly.
