Maria Elena Archuleta

July 14, 1940 - January 31, 2026

Maria Elena Archuleta, our vibrant, fun-loving, and wonderfully feisty matriarch, passed away on January 31, 2026. Born on July 14, 1940, in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico, Maria later made her home in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she spent most of her life cultivating a family as beautiful and resilient as her gardens.

Maria was a woman who lived life at full volume. She was the heart of summer afternoons, gathered with family to make her famous salsa—a tradition that tasted like home and heritage. She had a passion for travel, whether she was heading back to her roots in Mexico, seeking excitement in Wendover, or exploring many other destinations. While she found peace tending to her plants, her greatest joy was always found in the presence of her family.

She was famously “feisty,” a trait her family cherished above all. To know Maria was to know exactly where you stood; she was full of life, and you knew something was wrong only if that signature spark was missing. It was that very spirit that made her a fun-loving mother and an unforgettable grandmother.

Maria was preceded in death by her first husband, Gilbert Leyba, in August 1985. She found love and partnership again with Juan (Steve) Archuleta, whom she married on April 16, 1988.

Her legacy of strength and laughter lives on through her three children: Tina Leyba Fitzen (John), Gilbert Leyba Jr., and Veronica Leyba Chappell. Her spirit will continue to shine through her beloved granddaughters, Monique, Adria, and Alexandria. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews in Mexico who loved her dearly and will always remember her visits and her enduring love for her homeland.

A gathering for family and friends will be held on Friday, February 20, 2026, at St. Therese of the Child Jesus Catholic Church (624 Lennox St, Midvale, UT). The gathering will be followed by the Holy Rosary and Communion service at 11:00 AM.

Following the services at the church, Maria will be laid to rest at Camp Williams Utah Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Thank you to all the amazing staff at St. Therese and for those who have sent flowers to our family. We appreciate you so much.
