Maria Leondaras Kosmas
November 27, 1930 - January 10, 2019
On January 10, 2019, our beloved mother, grandmother and great- grandmother, Maria L. Kosmas, aged 88, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children and family.
Maria was born November 27 1930, in Sykadia, Chios, Greece, to Nikolaos and Vangelia Leondara (Haralambou).
In 1951, she married Jim Kosmas with whom they shared 61 happy years. Together, they immigrated to the United States in 1968. Maria was a professional seamstress and had the honor of altering clothes of some of the most prominent people in Utah. She worked for many companies during her career, including ZCMI, Mr. Mac, English Tailor and also owned her own tailoring shop for many years.
Maria was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church for many years. She took great pride in her vegetable garden, fruit trees and her flowers where she spent most of her spare time.
Maria is survived by her two children Kathy (Bob) Aerakis and Bill (Maroula) Kosmas, her grandchildren Jim (Lexi) Aerakis, Nick (Stephanie) Aerakis, Sofia (Lefteris) Travayiakis, Mary (George) Zoumberakis, Amber (Chrisian) Runno, Jimmy Kosmas, Aleko Kosmas, and Yiani Kosmas. Also survived by her brother Markos (Nektaria) Leondara, sister Angella (Stelios) Vlissidi, and sister-in-law Patra Leondara. She was also blessed with 14 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Maria was preceded in death by her husband Jim Kosmas and brother Yianni Leondara.
The family would like to acknowledge the compassionate care of the all the nurses and staff of Aspen Ridge East Rehab Center and Aspen Ridge Hospice. A special thanks to her personal nurses Autumn, Angie, Jeanette and Sonya.
The viewing will be held at Starks Funeral Parlor located at 3651 South 900 East in Salt Lake City on Sunday, January 13, 2019 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm with a Trisagion service beginning at 7:00 pm. Complimentary valet parking will be available. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 14 at 11:00 am at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 279 South 300 West, Salt Lake City, with burial to follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
