Mark C. Van Roosendaal
July 17, 1965 - June 17, 2016
Mark C. Van Roosendaal
"Rooster"
As Mark would say… "I'm either going to live my life, or I'm going to let cancer live my life."
Our loving husband, father, son, brother and friend passed away on Friday, June 17th, 2016, after a two-year battle with cancer. He was born on July 17th, 1965 to Eugene and Marianne Van Roosendaal in Murray, Utah.
Mark served in the Navy and was also in the National Guard with the 19 Special Forces. He became a police officer for the West Valley Police Department in 1989. To say he was a good man would be an understatement. He genuinely cared for the safety and well being of those under his charge. Mark was passionate and a true leader and always led by example. Proudly serving the citizens of West Valley City for 27 years until he retired with the rank of Deputy Chief. Not only has the City lost a faithful public servant, but men of the Police Department have lost a close and understanding friend.
Mark married Kathy Olguin on November 1st, 1990, and together they were blessed with two amazing sons Jacob and Trevor. To a man many called "friend" some called "brother" of which we were lucky to call "father". We lost our everything and our hearts are broken. We will cherish those time and memories of us together, until we meet again. We love you!
Survived by his wife of 25 years Kathy; two sons Jacob and Trevor; mother Marianne; sister Teresa (Frankie); brother Gene; and sister Kodie (Paul) Gill. Preceded in death by his father Eugene.
A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, June 24th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City. Complimentary valet parking provided on the north side of the building. Graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 25th at 11:00 AM at Riverton City Cemetery, 1500 West 13200 South, Riverton.
Mark's family would like to thank the caring staff of Utah Cancer Specialists, Doctor Mark Ott, as well as everyone who contributed prayers and positive energy during his cancer journey. He was humbled and truly touched by the outpouring of support.

It was an honor to know you and work with you. Chad and I would honestly say you were one of our favorite supervisors and there was no doubt in our minds that you cared for the people of West Valley City, those that worked and visited, and each of us!. We both have many fond memories of you and learned so much because of your example. Your work ethic was exemplar. Your smile and laughter contagious and your love for your wife, Kathy, and boys, Jacob and Trevor, was unwavering. You will be missed by us all! May your entire family, especially Kathy, Jacob and Trevor be surrounded by angels seen and unseen now and always! Thank you so much for your friendship!

Kathy, you have always taken a genuine interest in the lives of others and I have no doubts that Mark had more TLC than he knew what to do with. My heart goes out to you and the sorrow that you are going through. I KNOW that families are eternal and that he is waiting for you on the other side. I know that he is watching over you and your children. My heart goes out to you and your family and my prayers are with you.

Marty Mark. I will miss your stories from you time in the Navy. You were patient when I was a new officer. You and Bullet taught me a lot about being a k9 officer. We had great times and helped a lot of people. Our time together in the HEAT unit was probably my favorite. Thank you for the friend ship and being a mento that helped me become who I am. You will be missed

Suzette and I are so sorry for your loss. I am proud to have known Mark and work side by side with him at West Valley Police, specifically while on the SWAT team.
