Mark Jones 1944-2011

Mark Jones joined the Great Spirit early Sunday morning on July 3, 2011 after a courageous battle from an accident in 2008.

Mark Jones was a scholar who shared his gift of knowledge as a psychology professor at Westminster College.  Mark was well respected in the community and had a type of magic with his students and just everyday people alike. He was a loving husband, father, stepfather, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be missed dearly. Mark's many hobbies consisted of reading, research, an avid coin collector, camping, traveling and just being in the company of his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife Wilma; daughters Jennifer and Vanessa, Kina Coleman; stepchildren Mona Davey and Brennen Oliver; grandchildren Justice Coleman, Marcus Richards; and  his  great grandchildren Boston  and Sadie.

Funeral Service will be held at Starks Funeral Parlor 3651 South 900 East, Wednesday July 13th at 11:00 AM.

In Loving Memory

Sorry to hear about Mark. I was faculty with him at Westminster. I remember well "his magic with the students". He was well loved by them and a joy to work with. Pat Gay

I was so sad to hear about Mark's passing. I had him as a professor at Westminster in 1993 and he and the other strong faculty in the psych dept at W greatly influenced by decision to pursue a psych degree. Mark was very approachable and warm and knew how to give an engaging lecture. He challenged his students and showed great compassion for the human experience through his war stories. What a great example and teacher to us all. He will be missed.

There are few professors who have long-term, positive impacts on the lives of their students. Mark is one of those few. As said by others, his compassion, genuine caring for his students, and his desire to help them succeed was unsurpassed. Although I have not seen Mark in over 30 years, his impact on the course of my life and my career remain. As I teach, I aspire to his example. I hope the joy of his life softens the pain of his loss.

I just heard of Mark's passing through a mutual friend of ours, Bill Johnson. I can only say how shocked and sorry I am . He was a wonderful friend. We attended Weber College together and shared many wonderful experiences. He will always remain a respected and much admired friend. I am so pleased that he had such a loving, large and extended family. My heart goes out to all of you. Please contact me with information about the accident he never recovered from.

I miss my second father, I think of you often. Thank you for all the life lessons you taught me and all the laughs we had. You were real and will be missed. We will meet again, we change for, I know that. I love you.

I knew Mark at Ogden High School and at Weber State College we became very dear friends. I have always held a place for Mark in my heart. We had such great conversation. So many years ago. Best wishes to his wonderful family. Such a dear friend......

I'm not sure if this will find any of Mark's family, but I just found this and wanted to express how important Mark was to me as a student and person. Mark was the reason I went to Westminster. The day I met him I decided to leave the U of U and attend Westminster. I changed my major from Sociology and Philosophy to Psychology because of Mark. It was one of the best decisions I have made in my life. His classes were amazing and I loved his real life stores and how approachable he was. Did I mention super cool. He had a demeanor that was so calm and warm. He always made time to talk to me and he made me feel welcome at Westminster. I think about him all the time. I decided to look him up and found this. My heart broke. I know this is late, but I just wanted to write and express how much Mark meant to me and my life. Take care and with love. Former student, Trace Nuttall
