Marlena Pohlsander Schumann

9/12/1920 – 5/6/2009

Marlena died May 6th, 2009 in Salt Lake City, Utah.  She was born September 12th, 1920 in Celle, Germany the eldest child of Walter and Bertha Dorothee Schoneberg Pohlsander.   She came to Tremonton, Utah as the bride of Hyrum F. Schumann.  Their marriage was sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in 1939.  She and Hyrum spent their lives farming and ranching in Tremonton, UT and Clover Valley, NV.  Following Hyrum’s untimely death in 1961 she relocated to Peoa, UT where she and her sons operated a beef and dairy farm.  After a fire destroyed the dairy, she moved to Salt Lake City where she spent many contented years enjoying the opportunities provided by a city she loved. Although not born to it, Marlena adapted to the rigors of farm life.  Her heart was in her home and her homemaking skills were unexcelled.  She created a haven for her husband and children and many others in need of her mothering.  The guiding principles of her life were those taught by her Savior, Jesus Christ.  She was diligent in her service to family and church where she faithfully fulfilled many callings.  Marlena and Hyrum shared a rare bond, unique in its absolute devotion to one another.  His death left her to raise a family on her own, which she accomplished admirably.  She was a woman of grace and integrity.  She is survived by her children Celia (Gerald) Marchant, Dallas (Elizabeth) Schumann, Venna Ballard, Helen Schumann, Kathryn (Richard) Cahoon, Karen (Wally) Wright, Rolf Schumann and Reed (Katherine) Schumann; 35 grandchildren; 89 great grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; sister Ingrid Perkins; brothers Hans A. Pohlsander and John D. Pohlsander.   She is preceded in death by her husband; brother Gerdt Pohlsander; sister Alheit Van der Meide; and son-in-law Don Ballard. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 8th at 1:00 PM at the Winder 5th Ward, 1361 East 4000 South, Salt Lake City.  The family will receive friends at the church from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.  Graveside services will be held in the Clover Valley Nevada Cemetery on Saturday, May 9th at 11:00 AM.  To honor her memory donations may be made to the LDS Church Mission Fund.
