Martha Nyagile Thewat
July 10, 1977 - July 21, 2023
Martha Nyagile Thewat was born on July 10, 1977, in Akobo, South Sudan to Thewat Jangjuol Bithow and Chol Gach Nyuot. She left Akobo, South Sudan in early 1993 and traveled to Epou Refugee Camp, Kenya in search of better life. While there, she met and got marriage to James Ker Kuay. In 1994, they both received resettlement form to come to the United States. They arrived in Salt Lake City, UT in 1994. Although, they lived in Sioux Fall, South Dakota, and Worthington MN, Salt Lake City has always been her home.
Martha attended and graduated from Horizonte Instruction and Training Center, Salt Lake City, UT in 2000. She had a long career in services industry including, interpreting for newly arrive South Sudanese, Kitchen, custodian manager at Little America Hotel. In addition, she also held multiple roles in South Sudanese communities in Salt Lake City, UT. At the time of her death, she was working at the Salt Lake City International Airport as Line Cook. She has poured her energy to raising her family especially her children.
In recent years, Martha had suffered from complications of high blood pressure and blood clots.
A blood clot had traveled to her heart and caused a heart attack. Martha was preceded by her father, Thiwat Jangjuol Bithow and sisters, Nyawal Thiwat, Nyaluak Thiwat, Nyagony Thiwat, and her brother, Tut Thiwat. She was survived by her husband James Kuay, daughters, Chudier Kuay, Nyamuoch Kuay, Nyanyak Kuay, her sons: Lam Kuay, Kuek Kuay, and Tiem Kuay, her mom, Chol Gach Nyuot, sister, Nyabang Thiwat, brother, Gatkuoth Thiwat, sisters, Nyayiena Thiwat, and Nyamuoch Thiwat. She was loved very much and will be missed dearly.
