Mary Janice McClinton Potter

February 5, 1940 - August 16, 2009

Mary McClinton Potter

Mary Janice McClinton Potter died unexpectedly August 16, 2009 from acute respiratory failure following a week-long illness.

Born February 5, 1940, in Consul, Alabama to Lula Frank Sealy and Benjamin Clark McClinton.  She lived in Salt Lake City since 1946.  On December 28, 1963, she married Clarence Edwin Potter. Most of her life she worked hard as a beautician, and she herself was a beautiful and generous woman, known for “taking in strays”—children and dogs. In this she was supported by her husband Clair, who died August 4, 2006.  Mary took pleasure in books, weekends at the family cabin, visits with friends and family, and, in recent years, the company of her dachshund Buddy.

Among those who will miss Mary are her daughter Jannette; son Darren (Kim Adle); daughter Patty (Matt Classen); grandsons Beau Garrett (Jess) and Chase Potter; great-grandchildren Grace, Hank, and Chloe Garrett; brother Ben McClinton; sister Anne Rushton; sisters in the Zeta Masters Beta Sigma Phi sorority; and countless devoted nieces and young people whom Mary mothered over the years.

An open house honoring Mary will be Sunday, August 30th, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Potter home in Salt Lake City. Those wishing to contribute to a charity in Mary’s memory might consider the Tender Heart Techs Pet Alliance, 150 West 4800 South, Unit 3, Murray, UT 84107; http://www.tenderhearttechs.com/donations.htm.

Please accept my deepest sympathy at the passing of Mary. I have known her for 37 years as a sorority sister in Beta Sigma Phi and it was a real shock to hear of her passing. She will truly be missed by all her sorority sisters.

Matt & Patty, We are holding you up in prayer at this difficult time. We so enjoyed the few times we shared with Mary. She was a delight to be around and was always so thoughtful of Granny and us as well. We miss her. We love you much! Mom and Dad Classen

Our sincere condolences to all the family. Mary was my sorority sister when we lived in SLC. Although we have been gone for many years, we have great memories of the good times we had togehter at different activities and socials in sorority. She had an unique personality and could always bring a smile to everyone. She will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time. Ted and Tela Seim

I unfortunately did not have opportunity to meet Mary. I was called to be the local LDS Bishop last month and have been trying to meet everyone. From all that I can tell, Mary left the world a better place for having lived in it. My deepest condolences and sincere prayers be with your family. Bishop Smith

I have many fond memories of Mary. She was my manager when I worked for West Coast Beauty Supply. She was so nice and always offered to help me in so many ways. I will never forget late nights at work and the endless supply of Corona. I will never forget her kind acts. May God be with her and her loved ones always.
