Mary Louise Sanders Naughton

November 18, 1924 - August 26, 2013

On August 26, 2013 Mary passed away peacefully surrounded by her daughters in her home that she loved.  Mary was born in Salt Lake City, Utah to George Norman and Hazel Sanders on November 18, 1924.

She graduated from East High School and attended the University of Utah. A true passion for people and helping others led her to pursue a career in social work. Mary met James P. Naughton and the two married in 1954 following his return from the Korean War.  Mary returned to graduate school and completed her MSW in 1968 while pregnant with her 4th child.   She worked for Children’s Service Society of Utah for 32 years retiring as assistant director in 1986.  In her retirement she enjoyed doing volunteer work for Easter Seals and was a member of Church Women United.  She also enjoyed traveling with her family and spending time with her grandchildren. Mary loved reading, working in her yard and picking fresh tomatoes from her garden.  Mary had a truly gracious and generous spirit and had a way of making the people around her feel they were cared for.  A mother of 4, she was really mother to so many more throughout her long life.  Mary was a member of First Congregational Church.

She is survived by her daughters Maura (James Beson), Eileen (Terry Smith), and Carrie (Leon Wurzer); three grandchildren Patrick, Jack and Liam; sister Ann Hoopiiaina; and many nieces and nephews.  Mary was preceded in death by her husband James Patrick Naughton and son Patrick Naughton.

Special thanks to mom’s caregivers Olga, Gabby and to the exceptional team from Legacy Hospice.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 7th at 3:00 PM at The First Congregational Church, 2150 S. Foothill Drive.  Friends may visit with the family at a celebration of life on September 7th from 5 to 7 PM at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City.

In lieu of flowers please donate to your favorite charity.

Maura and Eileen my heart goes out to you on your loss. It has been just over a year that I lost my mom. I got to know your mom back in high school when I used to hang out with you. I then got to be involved with her again when I became a foster parent with Children's Service Soceity. She was instrumental in getting my foster son Jeffery when he was 14 days old and letting him stay in our home until there was an opening at the care center. Will always cherish having know her.

Maura and Eileen, everyone that was privileged to know your mom was blessed. Such a sweet, kind and beautiful person. I know you will miss her but you have some wonderful memories to comfort you. I always felt welcome in her home. She taught my daughter piano lessons a long long time ago. We loved her a lot. Veon Harkey
