Mary Papageorge Souvall

November 19, 1941 - September 17, 2025

“Love, strength, compassion, wisdom, courage and humility can be seen by whoever met Mary.” These are sincere and defining words from a dear friend, George Furgis Jr.

Mary spread love everywhere she went and in everything she did. She was a human angel and a representation of purity. She always touched those around her with her soft and graceful presence. Mary was born in Manhattan, New York where she was raised by her Mother, Eleni, and Father, Stefanos Papageorge. She grew up closely with her sister, Joni Kandilakis. Mary and Joni shared fond and precious memories. Her parents came to America as immigrants from Crete, Greece.

She then moved with her family to Golden, Colorado at the age of 7 years old. Mary was spiritual and religious, of the Greek Orthodox faith. She was very bright and studious growing up and received an academic scholarship to UC Boulder, where she studied for two years, until she met her soul mate, George Nicholas Souvall. She married George at 20 years of age on September 1, 1962 and moved with him to Salt Lake City, Utah. They resided in Holladay, Utah where she started her life with her family.

Mary was a devoted and loving mother to Stefanie, Lara and Nick. The highlights of Mary’s life were being a beautiful and loving wife, a mother to her children and especially being a grandmother to Louis Barnard and Gabriela Broadbent. Her family was always her priority above everything. Mary would be found caring for her loved ones, cooking Greek meals and admiring her family while they smiled and enjoyed her food. Her favorite color was lavender, her favorite flowers were irises and roses, and her favorite bird was the hummingbird. She taught her grandkids to love tenderly and to always learn through every experience. She was a guiding light for her family. May Mary live on in all of us.

Funeral services and burial will be held privately.

In Loving Memory

Mary was a beautiful person both on the inside and out, always with a smile and kind word. She was positive-minded and saw the good in life even when things were looking rough. My sincerest condolences to George and his children and may the Lord bless you with peace and understanding at this difficult time.

Mary and George were our next-door neighbors in Holladay, but for only some 6500 days. "Saint Mary" was a most appropriate name for Mary. May all the Greek Gods welcome her.

We are so sorry for your loss. My mother spoke very fondly of her cousin, and I cherish the stories she told of their days growing up together in Golden, Colorado. They are together in heaven now. May her memory be eternal.

Dear George, Stephanie, Nick, Lara, and grandkids, We're so sorry to hear of your loss. Mary was such a beautiful and gentle person, both inside and out. As we all know, George was the Poster Boy of Positivity, but Mary was the source of it. Cherish her memory. Love, Bill and Kim Souvall
