Mary Petrogeorge
November 30, 1928 - December 29, 2022
Our beloved wife, mother, yiayia, great-grandmother and nona, Mary Petrogeorge, passed away peacefully at home at the age of 94 on Thursday, December 29, 2022.
Mary was born in Crete, Greece to Kostandinos and Irene Katsohirakis. She migrated to the United States in 1955 and met the love of her life, Michael Petrogeorge, just a few days after arriving at a church dinner dance. They married May 20, 1956 and were happily married for 45 years.
Mary loved and trusted God and was an active member of the Greek Orthodox Church. The church, her family, and greek heritage were the most important things to her.
She was the happiest being around children. Over the years she provided childcare to over 12 children. She became their “yiayia” and she loved each of them as her own.
Mom always enjoyed being outside whether just to enjoy her daily walk or working in her yard, creating magical flower gardens and connecting with the birds and other wildlife. She had a sweet, fun disposition and was loved by all who knew her.
She is survived by her children: Despena, Chris (Jamie), Fr. Kosta (Maria) and daughter-in-law, Sophie. Her grandchildren: Michael C, Christie, Michael S., Paul, and Niko; and her great-grandchildren: Mikaela, Pyper, Annie, Lukas, Isaiah, Alexios and Michael. She is preceded in death by her husband Michael, her son Sam and grandson Dimitri.
A viewing will be at St. Anna Greek Orthodox Church, 9201 S 1300 E, Sandy, on Sunday, January 8, 2023 from 6:00-8:00 PM with the Trisagion prayer at 7:30 PM. Funeral will be Monday, January 9, 2023 at 11:00 AM also at St. Anna Greek Orthodox Church.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Starks Funeral Parlor. Please visit starksfuneral.com to share photos and memories with the family.
The family would like to give special thanks to the SLC Neighborhood House Adult Center for the care and fun they provided to Mom.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Anna Greek Orthodox Church in Sandy, Utah.
