Mary S. Layton

November 25, 1930 - April 3, 2013

I began life’s adventure November 25, 1930, in Ely, Nevada as the seventh of nine children to Roselda and Wilks Hofheins. We pioneered to Salt Lake City in 1942 where I graduated from South High School in 1948, soon after, marrying my love and sweetheart, Richard Duane Layton.  Then came children of our own, Glory, Joel, and Duane (Dewie).  Glory blessed us with grandchildren Brodie and Mitch, while Duane gave us Candace. Joel brought up the rear, late in life, with Ulysses. Brodie gave us great-grandchildren; Kelsie, Payton and Skyy.

Always an explorer at heart, we, as a family, were constantly on the move with vacations, long and short, to see the country coast-to-coast. Then, to find extreme joy spending time at our mountain cabin. Thrift stores and antique shops knew my face and greeted me as an old friend.  I became an artist, decorator, entrepreneur, remodeler and nature lover. A picnic or car ride were never out of the question. These latest years, between travels, I loved sitting on the patio to watch the ducks or enjoy quiet evenings with my favorite TV programs like Blue Bloods, or The Good Wife, cooling down with a Diet Pepsi and holding my recent grandchild when possible.

I am told I amused family and friends to no end, keeping my kids, grandkids, my loving husband, and my surviving brothers, Stan, John, and Warren laughing.  Life has been a joy brought to me through the love of my family. I have traveled a beautiful journey, but now my journey here has come to an end. To all my loving friends and family I say: “Keep on Dancing.”

A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday April 9th, 7-9 pm at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charitable thrift store.

On behalf of Mary’s family, we would like to thank the team at Affinity Hospice.

In Loving Memory

The world has lost a terrific person, Warm, open, kind, generous, creative, sincere, are a few of the endless adjectives synonymous to her. She once expressed how grateful she was that I was Ulysses' mother. Although planned by Joel and I, he effectively became a gift to her. I am proud to have given her the last 2 years with her boy, her last grandchild, Ulysses.
