Mary “Tooky” Frances Schuyler

April 4, 1943 - June 28, 2025

Mary Frances Schuyler, known to her loved ones and friends as Tooky, age 82 passed away on June 28, 2025 in Koblenz, Germany while on a river cruise enroute to a family reunion in Norway.   Born on April 4, 1943 to Dr. Herbert Zachareus and Juliet Litman Lund in Cleveland, Ohio.  She was a descendent of Anthon H. Lund.  She dedicated her life to her family, her faith, and her career embodying the virtues of selflessness, compassion and hard work.

Tooky grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and Greensboro, North Carolina. She earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Vermont in 1965. She came to Utah in 1973 and worked as a medical technologist at McKay Dee Hospital in Ogden for 35 years.

Her commitment to her faith was evident in her active participation at St. Florence Catholic Mission where she was a founding member of that community and where for 23 years, she led the Lector Ministry ensuring that there were readers for each of the Masses.  She sang in the church choir for many years.  She was a long serving member of the St. Jospeh RCIA team helping to bring the uninitiated into the Catholic Church.  She was a Lay Ecclesial Minister which led her to a much deeper understanding and commitment to her faith.

Her personal hobbies included reading, playing the piano – she loved Grieg. She was a life-long patron of the Utah Symphony.  She was a gifted Hardanger embroider in the Norwegian tradition.

She relished adventure and traveled the world.  She qualified as a commercial pilot, learning from flight instructor John Weir, who became her first husband in 1974.

Unconditional love was her strength, and giving to others was her exceptional gift. If you knew Tooky, you were lucky enough to feel loved by her.  She was kind to everyone and offered help in any way she could.

She was an eloquent lady.  She loved a good laugh; she had the unique gifts of being reserved and dignified. She was remarkably intelligent, yet never presumptive in any way.  She had a beautiful innocence about her, never having ill intent towards another.

She had a special love for animals.  Cats, dogs, gorillas, elephants, abandon donkeys – it didn’t matter. She loved Hunter, our family dog. She volunteered with Best Friends Animal Society, going to Nevada to save hoarded cats and as far away as Nazca, Peru on Animal Rescue Missions. Animal transports were very dear to her heart.

In keeping with her love for animals, Tooky met her husband of 27 years, Howard Schuyler, while he was walking his dog Maggie and she was walking her dog, Simon.   Some things were just met to be, Tooky’s and Howard’s love for one another was one of them.

A vigil service will be on Monday, August 4, 2025 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm with a recitation of the Holy Rosary beginning at 7:00 pm at St. Florence Catholic Mission, 6461 UT-39, Huntsville. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 5, 2025 at 10:00 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 514 24th Street, Ogden. Tooky will be laid to rest following the Funeral Mass at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 4th Avenue & T Street, Salt Lake City. A celebration of her life will be on Tuesday, August 5, 2025 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City. Guests are encouraged to park on the north side of the building. Please share your memories with her family at starksfuneral.com.

Tooky is survived by husband Howard Schuyler, brothers John P. Lund and Larry Lund, and nieces and nephews Hannah Taylor, Juliet Holder, Zachary Conron, Erin Lum, Jessica Leth, and Eric Lund. She is preceded in death by her parents, first husband, John Weir, sister Edith Lund, nephew Zachary Lund, and sisters-in-law Phyllis Lund and Nancy Lund.

We love you Tooky with all our hearts, we always will.

In Loving Memory

I got to know Tooky when she joined our Diocesan Lay Ecclesial Ministry Formation Program. Her good sense of humor, her openness to learning and sharing the Faith and her kindness toward others remain as happy memories for me. May she rest in peace and may her good works inspire others.

I am her older brother. Dad said, "Tooky has the distillation of all the Lund traits." When I mentioned that to her, she immediately laughed and said, "Well, he didn't say I was inebriated!" What he meant was she had a cheerful greeting and the Lund sense of humor. She and Edith had laughing fits which were hard to stop. Her laugh could brighten up a room. I remember her as a happy little girl sitting in the wooden highchair. She had light blond hair, big dark-blue eyes, and baby food smeared over her cheeks. One day she was playing Monopoly with Edith and me. She was about 8 years old, Edith 10, and me 13. I landed on one of her properties, and in her delight, she said, "That will be... $2,000." She smiled big as she picked up her big brother's payment off the table and said, "It's all mine!" She always had a pet and loved rescuing animals. We have photo of her holding a newborn kitten. At the end, she seemed happy and content in married life and the security of her faith. Jesus had forgiven all her sins. I didn't think she had very many. She talked about taking care of the animals in the Garden of Eden. Life would be fun, not too serious.

-ALOHA-Mrs. Tooky and Deacon Howard, My most faithful friends of mine and of my children, Melaquias and Nora. I wanted to share my most deepest and heart felt sorrow in mourning for the passing of Mrs. Tooky, my friend. I titled this letter of our condolences “ALOHA” because of its fitting definition and describes my most deepest thoughts when I speak of Mrs. Tooky and Deacon Howard. “ALOHA” means hello and goodbye, love, peace, compassion. All traits Mrs. Tooky has expressed in LIFE. One most act of love and peace Mrs. Tooky shared with me on my birthday(12 august) was how our loved ones are never really gone in TIME AND SPACE. That day, Mrs. Tooky shared with me -HOPE IN GOD- and gave me the most vivid depiction of HEAVEN. and how our loved ones are waiting by the sandy beaches of HEAVEN and “OUR BIG GREETING OF ALOHA.” Compassion- great adventurers you both are! As I viewed the memorial slideshow I bared witness to the HOLY you both had for animals and mankind. Mrs. Tooky and Deacon Howard if I could guess what animals you both would be ! It would have to be TURTLE DOVES made for each other- made to SOAR the highest mountains and sail the deepest oceans together. Never really separated!-JUST WAITING- for each other again waiting to say “ALOHA” again. Yes, Mrs. Tooky you were meant to fly in COMPANION SHIP and In COMPASSION with Deacon Howard. My birthday wish this year and every year! To come - would be for you and Deacon Howard to share one more “ALOHA” together…HELLO and GOOD BYE my friend, TOOKY. Thank you for sharing what TRULY HEAVEN is with me. Love Mike Romero and family.
