Meg Osswald

Meg Osswald died on April 4, 2022, enjoying what she loved most, hiking, camping, and rafting in the American Southwest with good friends.

Margaret Claire Osswald was born in Salt Lake City on August 9, 1987, to Ken Osswald and Ellen Maycock. She grew up as part of a close extended family, sharing holidays, vacations, and summers with aunts, uncles, grandparents, and cousins. Meg earned a B.A. in Environmental

Studies from Westminster College in 2009 and a J.D. from the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law in 2016.

Meg’s parents inspired her two main passions. From her father Ken, she learned to appreciate and respect the outdoors and enjoy skiing, rafting, and camping. From her mother Ellen, she learned the power and the impact of the law. Following law school, Meg was appointed O’Hara Fellow in Natural Resources at the Utah Attorney General’s Office, staying on after her fellowship to serve as Assistant Attorney General representing the Department of Environmental Quality. She recently began a new role as Assistant Director of the Division of Water Quality. Meg loved Utah and our mountains and deserts and never stopped working to improve our air and water.

Meg spent her leisure time exploring the Utah outdoors. She skied, hiked, river rafted, and traveled with friends and family throughout the West and around the world. She loved spending time with her family, especially her nieces Eve and Emma and nephews Sam and Quetzal. Her family will always remember her for her originality, which manifested itself in her creative Halloween costumes, imaginative Thanksgiving hats, and interesting, yet unappetizing, Christmas cookies.

Meg was loved and treasured by so many whose lives she touched. She leaves an indelible mark on our broken hearts. She was preceded in death by her father Kenneth Osswald, her grandparents, her uncle Thomas Malloy, and aunt Deborah Osswald. She is survived by her mother Ellen Maycock, aunts Christine Mitchell and Joan Mitchell (Harvey Colby), uncle John Mitchell (Laura), uncle Bobby Osswald (Nancy), 11 cousins, 4 “nieces and nephews,” and innumerable friends and colleagues.

A reception for Meg’s family and friends will be held at Starks Funeral Parlor, on Friday, April 15, 2022, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Please use the parking entrance on the North side.
