Michael Norman Kinnebrew
August 19, 1953 - March 9, 2025

“Nobody rides for free. Except this old sweat bee.”
-Michael Norman Kinnebrew, August 19, 1953 to March 9, 2025
Michael Norman Kinnebrew, or “Mike” as he was known to nearly all, was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1953 to Rosalind and George “Buddy” Kinnebrew. He was the third of five boys that were raised together in a small and cozy home. He was a Naval Corpsman, a traveling nurse, hiker, camper, runner, and so many other things to so many people; above all, he was a father, brother, and friend. Those who knew him, knew him well; his heart knew no greater joy than the happiness of those around him.
He was an avid outdoors-man who enjoyed many of the simpler things in life. Mike and his good friend, David Howell, built a cabin from the foundation to the roof in the woods on Putman Mountain, Alabama. Yearly backpacking, camping, or rafting trips were common. He could almost always be found outside running, biking, skiing, etc. and often with his soul-dog Buddy who was extremely fond of the Jordanelle trails.
Mike was a dedicated and compassionate nurse who impacted countless lives through his kindness, gentle demeanor, and reassuring presence. Coworkers often spoke of his infectious laughter and his ability to brighten even the hardest of days with a simple act of kindness.
Mike and Rita were able to take the “trip of a lifetime” to New Zealand to celebrate their retirement and 38 years of marriage. Mike was filled with immense gratitude and would often say how he was the luckiest man alive. To quote Mike, “In the poker game of life, I was dealt the Royal Flush.” His family and friends feel that they were the lucky ones to have him in their lives.
After an unexpected hospital visit, he passed away on March 9th surrounded by his loving family and friends. Mike continued his legacy of generosity by being an organ and tissue donor. We know that Mike would have been happy to know that he was able to save someone’s life.
He is survived by his wife Rita, son Taylor (Tawnee), and daughter Hannah as well as his brothers Hank (Cynthia), Peter, and Terry (Pam) Kinnebrew. He was preceded in passing by his parents Rosalind & George, brother David, and sister-in-law Lillian Kinnebrew.
The family would like to thank the staff at the University of Utah hospital for their kindness and compassionate care of Mike.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Summit Land Conservancy, or your local animal shelter in Mike’s name.
A celebration of life will be held in the coming months.
In Loving Memory
My tears keep flowing hearing of the loss of such a wonderful man, friend, nurse and fellow work buddy. Mike made going to work a joy. He always would stop to say hello, he was never too busy. And always wearing a smile. Mike is an inspiration to all of us. He will be missed by all. We are so sorry for your loss. We send hugs and more hugs to you all. You will be in our thoughts and prayers. ❤️🩹

I am blessed to have known Mike for almost 70 years. Though many things to many people -- son & grandson, husband & father & father-in-law, friend to many & acquaintance to few, Mike was my brother. And no one could have asked for a better brother. Mike was the middle of 5 sons. We were the closest in age, he being just over 20 months older than me. Mike was always willing to pitch in, to help, to sacrifice, to be a friend, and/or to plan & partake in the next adventure. Sharing 8 years of fatherhood & adventures with Mike and our 5 children in the 1990s, living just 65 miles apart, was an unplanned blessing. Mike strived to live his life by Helen Keller's motto: "LIFE IS EITHER A DARING ADVENTURE OR NOTHING!" As much as he was loved, Mike is, and will always be, missed by me and so many folks. He was a brother like no other. Rest in peace, Mikey, at least until we meet again!

I have just learned of Michael’s passing. I have no words to describe the sadness I feel. I can truly say Mike was one of the greatest persons I have ever had the privilege of knowing. He represented the epitome’ of kindness, decency, and humanity. He was the perfect the example of how to live “a life well lived!” He will remain in the hearts of all who knew him. Love to his family and friends (including his work family!)

I was absolutely stunned when I was looking for a friend’s obituary, and saw Mikes. Mike was so awesome to work with, always cheerful, calm, even in an emergency, and that southern drawl and smile. He talked about his wonderful kids and wife, who he loved so much. I can’t help but wonder how a guy who is so active and athletic could pass away. My mind is boggled. I’m so sorry for your loss to his family . 😢 I’ll be looking for his future wake.
