Michael Stephen Newton

May 13, 1959 - May 16, 2025

Michael Stephen Newton, our beloved brother, brother in-law, uncle and great uncle passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus on May 16, 2025, 3 days after his 66th birthday. Michael maintained his undying faith as a devout Catholic, courage, strength and sense of humor through many years of suffering from severe epilepsy and interstitial lung disease. He completed associate degrees in printing and drafting at Salt Lake Community College and had a few jobs in these industries until he became too handicapped from his illnesses to work. In his earlier years, he enjoyed collecting movie memorabilia, creating crafts, listening to music, reading, playing games and winning chess championships.

Michael continued to apply himself to community service at his assisted living facilities by volunteering as a Welcome Ambassador, Resident Advocate and Bingo Coordinator. He earned recognition as “Outstanding Volunteer” at Highland Cove Retirement Community. Even during his last days, he loved to play bingo and make other people happy by telling “DAD” jokes with his contagious and handsome smile.

He was preceded in death by his father Herbert Ewell Newton and his Italian mama Pina (Giuseppa) Chianello Newton. Michael is survived by his sisters Mary Williams (Galen) and Laurie Newton; his nieces Jennifer Boyd (Jared) and Kirstin Williams; and his great nephew and nieces. Michael’s attentive and loving family wishes to thank the excellent professionals at St. Joseph’s Villa who provided him with their caring expertise, especially Layna, Ginger and A.J.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated on May 30, 2025 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Internment at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Epilepsy Foundation Utah@give.epilepsy.com or the American Lung Association at lung.org.
