Nicholas Paul Stubbs

December 30, 1984 - May 29, 2021

Nicholas Stubbs passed away May 29, 2021 at the age of 36.

He was born on December 30, 1984, to Diane (McCollum) Perry and William Jeffery Stubbs. He grew up in Sandy, UT and Ogden, UT. He graduated from Bonneville High School and earned multiple awards for his artwork, including being awarded the Sterling Scholar.

Nick started drawing at an early age and quickly became passionate about art. We all realized quickly that he excelled at everything he did, including his art. His art was deeply personal and touched the lives of many. He spent hours at his desk bringing photos and other images to life or writing the thoughts that came from his heart. His niece admired his talent and began taking art lessons from him so she could be like Uncle Nick. Not to leave anyone out, Nick made time for all his nephews and nieces and made a special coloring book for each one of them that he drew himself.

Nick had a love and appreciation for the film industry and for a brief time wanted to become a director. As a teenager, he would spend many hours having movie marathons with his family and friends.

He also loved music and often found comfort through the lyrics of Kurt Cobain, Syd Barrett, Thom York, Jim Morrison, and Jeff Buckley. He taught himself to play guitar and wrote powerful music with deep meaning. As an adult, he joined a band with his friends and would occasionally play at open mic nights to share his talent with those of us lucky enough to hear.

He took on baking and filled the stomachs of his loved ones with his pursuit of the perfect flakey pastry and the perfectly barbequed pulled pork.

Nick loved deeper and more purely than anyone we know and touched the lives of everyone and anyone he met, but he shared a special bond with his sister Natalie long before any of us came to know him.

Nick is survived by his heartbroken family, Life companion and his person Brittany Lopez; Mother Diane (McCollum) Perry, stepfather Rick Perry, stepmother Cathy (Gibson) Stubbs; his sisters: Natalie Kreeck and husband Joshua, Emily Hepworth and husband John, and RaeAnah Stubbs; his brothers Jason Fifield and wife Marissa, and Nathan Stubbs and wife Jill. Nick was loved and adored by his six nieces and nephews whom he loved deeply: Norah Kreeck, Jack Kreeck, Chloe Hepworth, Ella Hepworth, Ivy Hepworth, and Kingston Fifield. He is preceded in death by his father William Jeffery Stubbs.

In Loving Memory

Diane and family, there are words to adequately express how sorry I am for your loss. Nick has been an Amazing person his entire life. I looked forward to every drawing or song he posted. Heaven certainly gained one of the best. Praying that the memories you hold close to your heart, comfort you in the days ahead. Sending much love. Cindy

Diane and Natalie, My heart is broken. I remember Nick as a little boy playing with my sons Mark, and Steven on 27th street. Even though so much time has gone by I still remember his and Natalie's cute little faces. You're family has been through so much. I am truly sorry this has happened. Take care. Sincerely, Deb Kidman ❤️

Although Dan and I were not related to Nick by blood, we felt like we were and he will forever be our great nephew. He will be missed by so many of us, although we know he is finally happy in his next journey. We love you so much Nick! Brittany, Diane, Natalie, Cathy and all the siblings and other relatives our hearts hurt for you all. Love to you all, Aunt Helen and Uncle Dan

It was with much sadness that the Department of English at the University of Utah found out about Nick's passing.  One of Nick's professors wrote that Nick "was the brightest light in my class, quiet but whip smart in answering questions and with a wry sense of terse humor." I was Nick's academic advisor for his English major.  We only had a couple brief phone appointments due to the pandemic, but Nick was very excited about being in the first cohort of students who declared our newly-created English B.S. degree. The faculty and staff of the Department of English will be working with the Dean of Students and our Dean in the College of Humanities to grant Nick an honorary English B.S. degree. Our deepest sympathy to Nick's familiy and friends . . .

Another quote from one of Nick's English professors (Carol Guarnieri): "Nick was in one of my classes last year, and I was struck by his phenomenally sharp instinct for literary analysis and expansive intellect; more importantly, though, I was impressed by his incredible thoughtfulness, consideration for his classmates, humor, and kindness. My heart breaks for his family and community. "

I love you Nick and Brittany. They are my grandchildren and always will be. Since the day I met them they were both so sweet. They have always given me a hug when they are leaving. I will miss Nicks hugs, he was a very special person. Now he is a special angel in gods care with all who went before him. Love you both so much. I've lived my life, I would trade places with Nick if I could he had so much to still give. He was so special. My heart goes out to all that are grieving. I will always cherish the picture he drew of Elvis for me.
