Patrick “Pat” Emmett Carrig
March 28, 1948 - February 24, 2026
“A life lived with love, laughter, and a full heart. May the Irish winds carry his spirit gently home.”
Pat Carrig, a man whose kindness, humor, and love enriched every life he touched, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2026. Pat was born on March 28, 1948, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Betty Lou and Dennis Carrig.
A proud West High Panther, he never forgot where he came from or the friendships that shaped him. He married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Barbara Ann Ungricht “Bobby”, beginning a lifelong partnership built on loyalty, laughter, and deep commitment. Together they built a beautiful life filled with the adventures of parenting, grandparenting, traveling, and simple everyday moments that became treasured memories. Whether raising their family or exploring somewhere new with family and friends, they were always side by side. Pat dedicated many years of his life as a locomotive engineer for Union Pacific Railroad. He took great pride in his work and, even more, in the friendships he built along the rails. His coworkers became lifelong friends who were like family, bonded by long hours and shared experiences. Pat was known for his dependability and the way he showed up for the people around him.
More than anything, Pat was a family man. Pat lucked out and was the father of two sons, Michael “Mick” and Christopher “Chris.” Raising two boys brought plenty of energy, mischief, and unforgettable memories. He always believed in them and wanted the very best for them. Later in life, Pat embraced fatherhood for a third time when he lovingly adopted and raised his granddaughter, Brooke. It became one of the most special chapters of his life. Raising her brought him a renewed sense of purpose and so much happiness. His love for Brooke was steady, unconditional, and one of the greatest joys of his life.
His love only expanded with each generation. He adored his grandchildren Tyler, Austin, and Amber, and his pride in them was something he spoke about often. They were truly the light of his world. He also cherished every second with his beloved great-grandchildren, Bentley and Olivia. Being a grandpa was one of his greatest joys. His family was his heart, his greatest accomplishment, and his constant source of happiness.
Pat was one of those rare people who never met a stranger. He loved to go beyond small talk and have real conversations. He could sit for hours telling stories, sharing memories, offering advice, or simply listening with genuine interest. Whether you were family, a friend, or someone he had just met, he made you feel special. He had a gift for storytelling, stories from his childhood and fun times with his siblings, to his railroad days and raising his kids, and he told them with humor, detail, and that unmistakable Irish twinkle in his eye.
He found peace outdoors, especially while fishing or golfing. Some of his most cherished moments were spent in Idaho, going to the rodeo or simply being surrounded by family, friends, laughter, and simplicity. Pat’s home was a place of comfort and warmth. If you walked through his door, he made sure you were welcomed, fed, and cared for. With his rosy cheeks, easy laugh, and generous spirit, he created a home where everyone felt like family.
Pat is preceded in death by his parents, Dennis and Betty Lou Carrig, and his brothers Dave DeGooyer and Mike Carrig.
He is survived by his loving wife, Bobby; his children Mick (Rose), Chris, and Brooke (Vince); his grandchildren Tyler, Austin (Savannah), Amber; his brother Tim (Shauna); his sisters Lynn Munden, Stella Bennet (Dennis), and Shannon Harte (John); along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will miss him deeply. A heartfelt thank you goes to Chris for his loving, dedicated care during Pat’s final days.
Please join us in celebrating Pat’s life on what would have been his 78th birthday, Saturday, March 28, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at The Ridge Golf Course, 5055 Westridge Blvd, West Valley, UT 84118. We invite all who loved him to come share memories, laughter, and the legacy of a life lived with great love.
Pat’s Irish Parting Words
“There are only two kinds of people in the world: the Irish, and those who wish they were.” May those words, which Pat loved and lived by, bring a smile, a bit of his humor, and a reminder of the joy he carried with him everywhere he went.
