Paul Weiss
January 10, 1954 - August 30, 2025
Paul Weiss passed away on August 30, 2025, surrounded by family at LDS Hospital after complications associated with surgery and a rare autoimmune disorder. The sun was shining on his face, and “The Race is On” by the Grateful Dead was playing.
Born January 10, 1954, in Salt Lake City, Utah at St. Mark’s Hospital, Paul grew up surrounded by the rich community of the Guadalupe Center, which his mother Suzanne Miles Weiss helped establish. He was a graduate from Judge Memorial High School in 1972. During these early years he worked at the Cafe La Morena alongside the Quinonez family (especially Victor) who stayed his lifelong friends and source of constant comfort food at El Chihuahua restaurant.
After studying abroad for two years at Franklin University Switzerland, he was admitted to the University of Utah where he studied chemistry and then went to Medical School. He graduated in 1981. During this time he discovered a lifelong love of motorcycles and courted his wife of 46 years, Bonnie Pruitt (with a lot of help from his BMW R/60). He served a medical residency at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University before a long, devoted career in radiology at St. Mark’s Hospital and Utah Imaging Associates. He retired in 2021. Bonnie was his constant companion through medical school, parenthood, and retirement. She was his concert date, motorcycle buddy, and best friend up until the very end.
Paul loved his family, friends, photography, astronomy, and music. He was often seen enjoying live music in his tie-dye t-shirts, reading sci-fi novels, or using his telescope to share the universe with his many friends and camping comrades. Throughout his life, he was a traveler and constant learner, staying up to date on the latest astronomical and medical research and seeing three solar eclipses – in Antigua (1998), Mongolia (2008), and Idaho (2017). He encouraged this sense of adventure and learning in his two children, Ben and Megan, who were always encouraged to be themselves and carry on his legacy of hard work mixed with a healthy dose of having fun.
Paul is preceded in death by his mother (Nancy Suzanne), father (Norman David), brother (Steve), and many beloved cats and dogs. He is survived by his wife Bonnie, children Ben (Jen) and Megan (Russell), siblings Joni, Jane (Steve), Rik (Kay), and Kathy (Kip), many wonderful cousins, nieces, and nephews, and his pets Ruby and Boss.
We are all in awe of his hard fight with VEXAS syndrome and his immense love for us. He was the kind of person family and friends could ask serious medical questions, then see him at a concert or on the ski slopes having the time of his life. As a big brother, he was “Google before Google” and the rock of the family, treating his whole family with loving kindness.
He tirelessly tended to a saltwater fishtank, planned camping and river rafting trips with his friends, drove wildly fast in his Mitsubishi “racecar” or his bright blue Toyota Landcruiser, “Yoda,” and donated to many philanthropic organizations that he believed in — all in addition to supporting a family that will forever be grateful for his love, stability, coolness, and intelligence. At his core Paul was a giver and a provider, and now he is keeping the party going up in the stars.
Special thanks to Paul’s entire medical team, especially the caretakers at LDS Hospital.
A celebration of life will be held Sunday October 12, 6pm at El Chihuahua Restaurant 3926 Highland Dr. Dress code: your best tie dye.
In lieu of flowers, raise a glass of cold beer to Paul and donate to one of his favorite organizations:
- KRCL 90.9 fm https://krcl.org/support-1/
- The Salt Lake Astronomical Society https://slas.us/join
- The Guadalupe Center https://guadalupeutah.org/ways-to-donate/
In Loving Memory
Paul was a mentor to me early in my radiology practice. He was wicked smart and had a fabulous giggle. Rock on my friend!

I feel so incredibly lucky to have had Paul in my life during my teenage years and early 20's growing up in SLC. He was one of the inspirational people in my life who showed me that it is possible to achieve great things in your career, while having an incredible time having fun outside of work. Sending light and love from Seattle to the Weiss clan. Ross

Dr Weiss was one of my favorite Rads. He was a no muss no fuss kind of guy and would often say things out loud that I was thinking as well! I am so sad to hear of his passing. My prayers to his friends and family

We will miss our good neighbor Paul walking his dog, Boss. Paul would shout out, Hello Roger and Bev , and stop to chat with us. He was excited to hear that our son named Paul was going into radiology and said, "He has chosen 's a great career and I'd be happy to answer any questions he has about it." That typified the caring and generous man that Paul was.

I was a student and later a radiologic technologist at St.Marks Hospital. I learned quick that if you washed the coffee pots and had fresh coffee when Dr.Weiss got there in the morning the day went smoother. He was a wonderful man and teacher. He will be deeply missed. Heartfelt condolences to your family. He will be rocking on looking over you all.

I am saddened to learn of Paul’s passing. I have fond memories of Paul from medical school, when he, myself and two others, were cadaver buddies. We rarely needed to look in the anatomy text twice, to name a structure. We just needed to ask Paul, because once he learned it, he never forgot it. He was bright as can be, funny, kind and caring. I am so sorry for your loss, Bonnie.
