Phil John Erickson
May 13, 1945 - August 2, 2010
Phil John Erickson
Phil John Erickson was born on May 13, 1945 in Moscow, ID to Herbert John Erickson and Dorothy Gulden Erickson. He was the third of seven children. He died at home of colon cancer on August 2, 2010.
During his lifetime Phil was fortunate to have many opportunities to travel, first in the Army, and then with his wife and children throughout their married life. He loved to travel. He was a geographer; traveling expanded his awareness of different cultures and provided the entertaining and enlightening stories he told to his Salt Lake Community College students. Teaching became his life after 19 years working for Salt Lake Corporation.
Phil’s biggest achievement in his working career was his involvement in restoring the City and County Building. It was finally completed and reopened to the public on April 29, 1989 with a gala “Celebrate the City” event. He served on committees for years afterward to ensure that the restoration remained intact. It remains as beautiful as when it was first built in 1894.
I first met Phil in December of 1972 on a date set up for us by mutual friends. We were married July 14, 1973 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church thirty-seven years ago this year.
Our daughter Kate was born April 26, 1979. Our son Todd was born March 7, 1983. Phil loved to travel and having our children made it even more exciting to do so. It was important to help them be citizens of the world; to be accepting of other cultures, learn from those cultures and grow to be strong and independent. Planes, trains and automobiles, but perhaps trains were the most fun.
Our home is just outside Memory Grove which was important to Phil and I. Along with our equally committed neighbors we have seen it rise to beauty even after the devastating flood of 1983 and the tornado which destroyed it in 1999. Our neighborhood is truly a community of friends and has remained so during our 30-year sojourn here. Thank you for all the love and support.
Phil is survived by his wife, Jane; children Katherine Ann and James Todd Erickson; brothers Matt (Mary), Todd (Mary Kay); sisters Anne (Jay) Fortun, Mary Evelyn Erickson; several nieces and nephews; and the most recent addition to our family, Xia, James Todd’s wife since July 24, 2010.
Friends may call upon the family at a wake to be held at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East on Tuesday, August 10th from 7-9pm.
“Camarado, I give you my hand! I give you my love more precious than money, I give you myself before preaching or law; Will you give me yourself, will you travel with me? Shall we stick by each other as long as we live?”
-Walt Whitman, Song of the Open Road
Oh, yes, Phil, I will.

Dear Jane, Kate and Todd - The world has lost one of the good guys. I can't fully express how much I am going to miss my friend Phil. His stories of his many travels, especially to England, his kindness, laugh, and our lunches together I will miss most. You're all in my thoughts and prayers.

Jane and Family, I was so sorry to hear today of Phil's passing. Upon hearing the news, I had a flood of memories come to me of Phil's kind manner, his depth as a person and his great sense of humor. I really appreciated our association at the City nearly 20 years ago now. Best wishes to you Jane, I lost my own dear wife five years ago to ovarian cancer and know something of the pain you are feeling. May your tender heart find comfort.

Jane, Phil isn't gone ? he's only away, on another travel adventure, in which you can join with him at a later time. For the past twelve years now, Lorna and I have had the pleasure of knowing you and Phil, occasionally meeting, a few of your other close family members. We've enjoyed the frequent social occasions we've shared, along with your close friends and neighbors from that wonderful Canyon Road group we've called for some time now, the ?City Creek Revelers.? And so, following your quote from Walt Whitman, accompanying others who choose such camaraderie, we will continue to share your continuing life's travel adventure. Be it just a walk up Memory Grove, or be it the necessary, grieving steps, saying good bye to a loved one, we and a number of others will travel along with you. Love, Jim and Lorna

Jane This is Kathy Lloyd, Sandi Roundy's friend and hoepfully yours. Sandi told me of your husband's passing and although I do not know you or him very well I wanted to offer you my condolences. I'll never forget how kind you and Phil were up at Huntsman when my cousing was up there getting the terrible news that there was nothing more they could do for him and basically sent him home to die. You and Phil were just leaving the hospital and Phil looked very eager to be out of that place. Your kind words meant alot to me that day and something I have never forgotten. I think my cousin would have liked Phil. Now they are together in a place that only they will know. Keep strong and know that you are in my prayers.

Oh Jane, once in a while a professor comes along who not only makes the subject you are learning so wonderful, but who also becomes a friend. Phil was that professor. I took every class he offered because it was so fabulous the way he taught. I have so often thought of him as I've repeated different things I learned. Mostly however, I miss our after class visits where we discussed everything from the ridiculous to the sublime. Phil was such a presence, its so hard for me to believe he's gone. I firmly believe that we will see him again. I hope you know that I include you in my prayers, that you will have peace and comfort during this time of separation. I love you Jane. You and Phil are wonderful people and I want you to know that I truly care for you. Sincerely, Rachel Ehrhardt

Oh, Jane, I am so sorry to learn now almost 14 years later, of Phil's death. All the time I was working with him to make the documentary "For Another Century," about the restoration of the City & County Building, I was impressed that he was one of the nicest people I'd ever met. It was an honor to work with him. He made the show happen, as I'm sure he did much else in the saving of the building. Please share my condolences with your family and the many people who loved Phil.
