Rachelle Satz Dunn

September 5, 1941 - November 4, 2011

Rachelle Satz Dunn went to sleep peacefully November 4, 2011, surrounded by her family and loved ones after a very long and courageous battle with myelofibrosis.  Rachelle was the strongest and bravest person we knew. Rachie knew what she wanted and knew when she wanted it.

Rachelle was born on September 5, 1941 in Philadelphia, PA to Adele Freedman Satz and Max Satz. She was the youngest of four children and the only girl.  She is survived by her husband, best friend, and soul mate Kenneth Lee Dunn. They celebrated 54 wonderful years of marriage November 2, 2011.

Rachelle was a very loving and caring mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, daughter and friend. She was very proud of her children and grandchildren. She taught them many wonderful life lessons.

She is survived by her children George Dunn, daughter-in-law Karen Dunn, Constance Dunn Larsen and son-in-law Ronald Larsen, Donald Dunn and daughter-in law Nichole Dunn; 8 grandchildren Daniel, Alissa & Jamie Dunn; Lindsey, Ian, & Tyler Larsen; Max & Kate Dunn; brother Irwin Satz (Debbie); sisters-in-law DeAnne Hanson and JoAnn Geffen; cousin Sandra Esner, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family and friends.

Rachelle and Kenneth loved to travel. She would always tease Kenneth and say “the reason I married you was because I love you and you offered me a Greyhound Bus ticket to Salt Lake City, Utah and a marriage license.”  Rachelle loved Utah and loved to visit any ocean at least once a year.

Rachelle graduated from West High School in Salt Lake in 1959, she was a life long panther. Early in her career, she worked for Salt Lake Hardware, First Security Bank, and then the State of Utah, Office of Recovery Services for 21 years. She was affectionately known as the “Barracuda”. She was very proud of the work she did, helping so many people and always being so supportive.

Rachelle was very proud to help bring Planned Parenthood to Utah in the 1970’s. She also enjoyed serving as a Girl Scout Leader.

Rachelle loved her association with the Red Hat “Sassy Scarlett’s” group in St George.  They brought her so much joy.  She was also a very proud Democrat.

Rachelle will always be known for her kindness. She believed if someone needed help we should lend them a hand.

Rachelle wanted to thank all of her wonderful friends, family, and caregivers who helped her through her hard times with her Myelofibrosis blood disease.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Rachelle’s life on Monday, November 7th from 6 – 8pm at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, SLC. A private family service will be held the following day.

In lieu of flowers, Rachelle requested donations be made in her memory to the West High Alumni Scholarship Fund. Donations can be sent to WHS Alumni Assoc. 241 North 300 West, SLC, UT 84103.

In Loving Memory

Rachelle was a very loving and caring person and also a great photographer. One of my favorite photos of my children was shot by Rachelle. When Lindsey was a baby, Ron, Connie, and Rachelle brought her to my house and set up a beautiful shot in my front yard with the fall leaves, a jack-a-lantern, and the four kids. That photo remains one of my favorites, and I think of Rachelle each time I see it. Love to all of you at this tough time. Dena Loveless

I am Rachelle's cousin Gerrie from the east coast. She and Ken always called me when she came to the Atlantic City area. We would meet for lunch and lots of talk about memories. Rachelle was a very generous person...I will miss our phone calls. I am sending my love and condolences to Ken and his wonderful family. My heart is with you all at this very sad time.

Although I did not know your mother Connie - I do know you and I am sure she took great pleasure and pride in the wonderful woman she nurtured and gave life too. You are a special person Connie always going the extra mile for others and I am sure your dear mother had something to do with teaching you to be the wonderful person you are. Rach, you always told me that you are my Jewish mother. I remember the first day I met you at ORS and you asked me if I was married because you had a granddaughter.....I loved you for it.

I am sorry I won't be at the funeral. She was an amazing person. She was warm, compassionate, and wise. And she certainly spoke her mind. I loved her dearly. She was like a second mother to me. I miss her already. This is so difficult and I know you will find the strength to get through it. And please, make sure Ken eats. Love, Karen

Ahhh Rachelle, we had such a good time in the 70's working to help PPAU (Planned Parenthood Association of Utah) get a foothold in Utah. We worked together on the Salt Lake Board with fund raisers. We worked hard for the cause in the process we became good friends. I am sad that we drifted apart over the years. I am sorry I can not be there tonight but my husband has suffered a stroke and I can not leave him alone for very long. You have always been a very special lady, thank you for your love and friendship.

Wow, Luke and I can easily remember the first time we were introduced to Donald's mom! What an impression Rachelle makes - and what a firecracker she is! Utah has been so lucky to have such a great advocate.

Rachie was te finest example of friend and Jewish mom I have ever known. She has been a brightness in our lives and I adore her children - especially Donald whom I've known since he was 14! I remember the story of her passing around a very big basketball player's shoe for people to fill with money for Donald's campaign! She would be surprised to find out the degree of admiration and gratefulness we all felt for her.
