Ray Herrera

March 14, 1961 - April 8, 2019

Our amazing father, son, brother, and friend, Ray Herrera, passed away April 8, 2019 in Salt Lake City, Utah at age 58.

He was born March 14, 1961 in Farmington, New Mexico to Angelina and Elijio Herrera. Ray graduated from South High in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1979 and served in the Navy from 1979-1983 as a communication electrician.

Ray was loved by many and will always be remembered as being the best cook. He loved having his children over for Sunday dinners where he would be sure to make something that everyone could enjoy. Ray had his three favorite fishing spots and enjoyed taking his children, friends, and family members fishing with him.

Ray had a wonderful sense of humor and always made the room light up with his contagious smile and laugh. Ray worked for Sandy City for 20 years, he enjoyed his job and cultivated many lifelong friendships with the people that he worked with. He always had stories to tell about the many projects he was working on. Everyone who knew Ray recognized his Sandy City truck, his sister Jackie would always try to get his attention when she saw him driving his work truck so they could pull over and talk.

Ray enjoyed traveling and going on road trips, and he always made sure that his funk music was playing with some R&B mixed in between.

Ray will be deeply missed and he will always have a place in everyone’s heart that knew him. He was always there for anyone who needed help or needed him.

Ray was preceded in death by his father Elijio Herrera.

Ray is survived by his mother, Angelina (Ismael) Garcia, and Barbara Herrera; three children, Sergio Herrera, Isaiah Herrera, and Brandie Herrera, 3 grandchildren Hannah Herrera, Bianca Herrera and Yoshi Herrera; Seven siblings, Norman Herrera, Madeline Herrera, Terrill Hernandez, Jackie (Rob) Alldredge, Rachel (Alfonso) Montes, Norma Garcia-Rogers, and Veronica (Anthony) DuPonty; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Memorial Services will be held in his honor on Saturday, April 27, 2019 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City. Guests are encouraged to use the complimentary valet parking on the north side of the building.

Condolences to Rays kids and his family. I worked alongside Ray here at Sandy City for 15 years. He was one of the first guys I spoke to when I first moved to Utah from California. We were both LA Dodger Fans and enjoyed talking baseball with Ray. Thank you Ray for your friendship and he spoke highly of his family. He was truly proud of his kids and their accomplishments. Ray was never afraid of work and always offered to help and teach others around the work site. He made me realize to lead and work by being a good example. Thank and RIP Ray Herrera. You will be missed here at work.

I’ll never forget that smile. Ray coached my son Sheldon in baseball for several years in Kearns, I also helped him coach for a couple of years. I learned a lot from Ray and not just about baseball. The world lost a great man. My condolences to the Herrera family, remember Ray will always be smiling down on you. God bless. Brian and Cherie Masarone Herriman
