Raymond Earl Edgar
December 23, 1953 - August 6, 2024
Our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend passed away peacefully in his home after a brief but difficult battle with pancreatic cancer.
Ray was the second oldest child of Richard and Jesse Edgar. He grew up in Salt Lake City with his older sister June (Gary) Wassmer and his younger brother Scott Edgar who preceded him in death. Ray loved his siblings and spoke fondly of his childhood time spent fishing, camping, and making stovetop popcorn with his family.
Ray graduated from Granite High School in 1972. While in high school, Ray played on the basketball team and was dubbed the “Blonde Bomber” for his wicked jump shot. The summer after graduation, he got his first (and final) job at Wheeler Machinery. Ray worked at Wheeler Machinery in various positions for 47 years until he retired as the longest-tenured employee in the organization in 2020. Ray made many lifelong friends at Wheeler and took great pride in working there as evident by his robust collection of “CAT” and Wheeler Machinery apparel.
Ray married Patricia “Patsy” Edgar on August 14, 1992. Together, they cared for a beautiful home and yard (West Valley City’s “Clean and Beautiful 2022” award winner) and went on many great adventures including camping at Lady Bug Landing, cruises with family and friends, and a recent trip to Europe with their partners in crime, Patsy’s brother Craig and his wife Marie.
Together, Ray and Patsy raised three children from previous marriages: Nick (Natina) Edgar, Amber (Adam) Gallagher, and Austin (Melissa) Christensen. Ray was a great father to his children and their spouses and he showed his love for them with phone calls, acts of service, and by sharing his world famous sense of humor. Ray’s children have so many fond memories of growing up with “HooRay/Raymundo.” Hours spent playing cards, attending ball games, and listening to him recite his “rhymes and riddles” will always hold a special place in their hearts.
Ray was also a wonderful grandfather to seven amazing grandchildren: Kaden, Griffin, Grace, Ava, Dane, Preston and Kellan. Ray took great pride in his grandkids and loved taking trips with them and attending their ball games. His grandkids loved Grandpa’s silly sayings, and dry sense of humor and will always love the song “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond because of him.
Ray’s family and friends would like to give a special thanks to the staff at Utah Home Health and Hospice and the Utah Cancer Center who worked with him towards the end of his life. Your kindness and compassion will always be remembered.
Ray was an amazing person who touched the lives of many. He will be greatly missed. A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, August 14, 2024, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Stark’s Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City, UT where friends and family will gather to celebrate his remarkable life. Guests are encouraged to use parking and entrance located on the north side of the building.
In Loving Memory
Bruce and I were saddened to hear about the passing of Ray. Though it's been some time since we were in high school together, we still remember the kindness and warmth he always brought to others. Please know that our thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time. Wishing you strength and peace. Our deepest sympathy, Bruce and Cindy Brandol
