Richard A. Conrad

February 24, 1929 - July 24, 2009

Richard Albert Conrad “Dick”

The most awesome grandpa “ever” passed away on July 24th, 2009.  He was born February 24th, 1929 in Salt Lake City to Birdie Rasmussen and Albert Conrad.  He spent the majority of his adult life in Salt Lake.

Dick enlisted in the Army out of high school and spent about 4 years there.  He retired from Chicago Bridger & Iron at 52 years of age and went on to open a business called Dick’s Check & Lube with his son Richard “Tiny”.  The business was purchased by UDOT and he retired once again.

Dick loved being with family in his backyard, having barbeques, swimming or in his trailer going to Ouray, Colorado.

Wednesdays on the golf course with the guys became a tradition.  Then later with his grandsons and son-in-law.

The most rewarding and joyful part of his life was having children and the grandchildren they blessed him with.  Watching and supporting them play sports (especially football) were some of the best.  His two oldest grandsons played for Judge Memorial Catholic High School and the youngest begins Little League on a Judge Team this year.  We all feel positive that he will be watching Carson too.  The many hours working with Bryce and the secret jokes between Dick and Reese will always be remembered.

He was special, unique, kind and forever forgiving.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years Virginia Thomas Conrad; daughter Ann Cerise (Demar) Butterfield; grandsons Bryce “Punker”, Reese and Carson Butterfield and Richard Evan and Nick Conrad; brothers Hank (Marba) Skola and Arnold (Eleanor) Conrad; and sister Norma Conrad Bowman.

He is preceded in death by his son Richard Reese Conrad “Tiny”.

A wake will be held on Sunday, August 2nd from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City.

A prayer service will be held on Monday, August 3rd at 11:00 AM at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 1375 E. Spring Lane, Salt Lake City.  Entombment to follow at Salt Lake Mausoleum, 1001 11th Avenue, Salt Lake City.

In Loving Memory

Living next door to the best neighbors in the world for the past 20 years is our good fortune; losing one so loved and respected is our sorrow. His kindness and help with so many things that I could not fix- my lawn mower, my truck and car- we appreciated Dick every day. The conversations we had are not replaceable. We will always keep him in our thoughts and prayers, and in difficult times we will remember Dick's strength and determination throughout his illness, and hope that we might be as strong.
