Richard Arthur Groth

June 19, 1943 - May 6, 2025

A name that can’t be forgotten. A beloved father, grandfather, coach, teacher, and overall incredible human being. Richard was a legendary figure—equal parts hero and humble helper—known for his boundless energy, competitive spirit, compassionate heart, and unwavering dedication to the people he loved.

He was the kind of person who would drop anything to help a loved one, always ready with a smile, a nickname, and a presence that made you feel like the most important person in the world. Whether you were watching a game, going to the dealership, or just hanging out, he made every moment feel special. Richard embraced his role as a grandfather with joy and pride. To his grandson Daunte (aka “Donkey Konk”), he was not just a grandpa—he was a best friend, a mentor, and a guiding light.

Richard was a super athlete and a fierce competitor, with a heart equally strong in tenderness. A champion on the field and in life, he played quarterback and skied for the University of Utah, and later channeled his passion into coaching and mentoring young athletes. He was inseparable from his brother Ray, with whom he shared a deep love for football and a devotion to helping kids—especially those with special needs—succeed on and off the field. His empathy for others, especially for those who often go unseen, was one of his most defining traits.

Richard was born on June 19, 1943 in Idaho Falls, ID and passed away peacefully on May 6, 2025, with music in his ears and a basketball game on TV. He is now reunited with his beloved father Ray and mother Helen, doing what he loved—running, jumping, and playing with no pain and nothing holding him back.

He is survived by his two daughters, Gabriele and Tamara, and his four beautiful grandchildren.

His legacy lives on in their stories, their laughter, and their love. As Daunte says,

“I love you forever, Grandpa. I will carry on your legacy.”

Celebration of life will be held at Kenn Garff University Club At Rice-Eccles stadium (VIP Room) on Thursday, June 19th 2025 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, 451 South 1400 East, Salt Lake City, Utah 84112.

Anytime I think of Richard it’s always with a smile on my face. He made me laugh all the time and I loved the banter. Thankful for the chance to be apart of his life.

Lots of love to his girls and family! Grateful to have had Richard in my life! Three favourite memories are him flying to a Scotland for my wedding and wearing a full kilt!! Going to Hebgen lake and seeing him waterski barefoot! And going with him to New Zealand and driving all over the North and South Island in an RV with him, my mom (Allyson) and my grandpa. I wouldn’t let him stop to play tennis on a grass court and I hope he has forgiven me. He went roller blading and crashed; we had to take him to a random military hospital for stitches. Life was always an adventure with Richard!!
