Our ‘Papa’ Dick

Richard Louis Maulorico, a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, son and friend passed away on Tuesday, December 20th, in his Herriman home. He left his life after a courageous battle with Frontotemporal Degeneration, a debilitating dementia.

Richard “Dick” was born September 5, 1946 in Fullerton, California to Ben and Maxine Maulorico who have preceded him in death. He graduated from the University of Iowa and received a Masters Degree from USC. He worked his entire career in Human Resources. He started his career at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Later, Dick with his family moved to Salt Lake City and worked at Rockwell International.   He also worked for Western Forge, RBM Enterprises and Ford Credit in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Dick served his country as a Captain in the US Army during the Vietnam War at TASCOM Headquarters in Worms, Germany. He was very proud being part of the Adjutant General’s Corp.  He also trained in artillery and civil engineering.

Dick was an enthusiastic outdoorsman and shared this love with his family. He was an avid skier.  He skied in Germany, Switzerland, Virginia and Utah. He taught his daughters to ski. He took his family camping extensively in the West.  He loved to hunt and shot his first deer on his horse in the Timpanogos Mountains.

Dick loved his uncle’s farm in Iowa and was called a “weekend farmer” by his family. In Utah and Colorado, he raised and trained quarter horses. He built a barn and fenced in 35 acres to accommodate his horses. It was his favorite passion in life.

Dick is survived by his wife of 41 years, Kristine, who has been his caregiver for the past 10 years. They have two daughters; Angie (Matt) Mirrione and Andrea (Rich) Learned. He has five vibrant and loving grandchildren; Madeline (7), Trey (6), Riley (6), Peter (6), and Ryker (2). Dick also has three sisters; Beverly(Wayne) McKnight from Wetumpka, Alabama,  Pam (John) Sedgwick from San Jose, California, and Carol (Fred) Beyer from Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Family and friends are invited to Dick’s Celebration of Life and Funeral Mass.  Please join us at Stark’s Funeral Parlor (3651 South 900 East, SLC) on Wednesday, December 28th from 6 to 8 PM.  The Funeral Mass will celebrated at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church  (300 East 11800 South, Draper) Thursday, December 29th, at 10:30 AM.  Interment and Honor Guard at Herriman Cemetery (12465 South Pioneer Street (6000 W.), Herriman, UT) following Mass.

My first memory was when Angie and I were graduating and our parents were getting us gym memberships for our gift. Dick came in with my parents to the gym and amazed us all with his sharp skills, intelligence, negotiation abilities and overall knowledge. We walked out of there with a deal that was unmatched, all a credit to Dick. He was incredibly intelligent and loved his daughters more than mere words could ever express. Dick you left a wonderful legacy, rest in peace!

It was an honor to meet and know Dick and Kris. I am sad to hear of Dick's passing, but at the same time, glad he is free to live again without his limitations...he is in heaven with Gordie and all his dementia friends who have gone on before. Much love to you and your family Kris. Sue

I called Chris a while back (as soon as I learn of Richard's passing), but I have yet to tell his kids how sorry I am at their loss. I understand, after reading everything I have thus far, that he wasn't "quite with it" when he passed. It doesn't make it any easier to get past the fact that he's now gone. My love is with each & every one of you, along with your kids, as well. Mariad
