Robert P. Holbrook

Loved Life

Robert Parkin Holbrook, age 75, died March 14th, 2009 of congestive heart failure.  He was surrounded by the love of so many family members.  He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Born January 2nd, 1934 in Bountiful, Utah to hearty pioneer stock, Leo S. Holbrook and Arlene P. Holbrook.  Married Marilyn Beath, October 11th, 1955.  She was the mother of their four wonderful children.  Later divorced.  Married Sally Lomax July 17th, 1970. Bob attended Davis High School, where he excelled in sports.  He entered the US States Navy where he was assigned to an aircraft carrier, USS Sicily, CVE 118 during the Korean War.  He served two tours of duty working the entire time as a Chaplain’s Assistant. Upon returning from the service, Bob worked at Phillips Oil Refinery in Wood Cross.  He then worked at Hercules in Magna, Utah for 32.5 years working in the testing facilities.  Bob enjoyed his time there and made so many friendships. Bob was an excellent gardener, accomplished woodworker and a superb photographer.  Bob and Sally covered most of the world in their travels.  Kenya and Egypt were two of his very favorite locations to photograph.  He had a zest for life and loved people.  He was at his best when he was playing practical jokes or was teasing the kids. He is survived by his best friend and sweetheart Sally; daughters Cynthia R (Dixon) Shumway, Cathleen L. Holbrook; son Robert B. (Brenda) Holbrook; three brothers Clarence, Stanley and Larry; two sisters Joyce and Janette; grandchildren Heather, Jake, Catie (Wade), Travis (Amy), Jeff and Dillon; great-grandchildren Cole, Haley, Lauren, Kjirsten and Cambrie. Preceded in death by his parents, and one son Timothy, and his favorite kitty Lilbud. Special thanks to all the wonderful caregivers that improved Bob’s quality of life, with a special thanks to Dr. Scott West.  Bob wished to be cremated and scattered at a location of extreme beauty that he loved to photograph.  A family memorial service will be held.  Friends may call upon the family at a wake to celebrate his life on Friday, March 20th from 6 to 8 PM at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in his name to the Humane Society of Utah or Best Friends or a charity of your choice.

In Loving Memory

Sally, I was so sorry to hear of your loss. I never really worked with him, in fact I only met him once but I know he was a smart guy for getting you! He has now added a new travel location to his favorites (heaven) and is now breathing deeply clean air and taking in beutiful vistas (I think they have camras). Our prayers are with you, Mark

Sally: I was shocked and superised at the death of Bob. I have not seen you guys too much this Jazz season and I guess I just let it pass me by. I am sorry to hear that Bob left us all, he as indeed a neat guy, I remember many chats and different things we passed and talked about at Hercules for all those years we worked together and you also. Time seems to pass and we kind of lose tract of our friends. Just know this Sally that I too feel the loss of Bob, you guys were good friends to me for many years. God Bless you, if I can do anything for you just contact me and I will be there to help you. Paul Mattson

Aunt Sally, I'm sorry to hear about the loss of Uncle Bob. I'll never forget the wonderful times at the apartment with him. I remember the times at the pool, when he would be shooting my sister, Ellen and I with the hose, trying to sink us as we fought for the poolside in a small raft...or when we dove for coins that he had tossed in the bottom of the pool. Another memory was him sharing his wisdom with me about the galaxy. I remember how happy I was when you married him. I'm sure that was the highlight of his life! I remember his wittiness talking about the house you both built together, when I came home on leave after the Phoenix missle crisis. Even before you married him, he treated me like one of his own. He was kind and good, and will be sorely missed. My prayers are with you...and God better have a good sense of humor, or Bob will get the best of him. All My Love, Paul

To my dear friend Sally, It has been such a very long time since we have been in touch, but I often thought about you and Bo and wondered where you were and what you were doing. I wished we could have gotten together these past years, but family, work, and health problems have kept us from doing a lot of what we wanted. Bob's pictures are great. He was gorgeous in his 'old' age. And I'm glad you and he got to travel. You were the absolute light of his life, and I remember how devoted and protective he was to you and about you. He had a wicked sense of humor and scared me to death until I got to know him (through you) and realized what a big softie he was. I hope that in the near future you can contact me and we can get together and just gab. I always thought you guys were still in Bountiful....anyway, I'd love to see you. As always, my love and prayers are with you. You both were and are special people in my memories. Love, Sherry (and Jack) Haymond Telephone: 8012668103

Sally, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. Bob was such a joy to be around. I think of you often and all the fun times we had at ATK. I'm sorry I wasn't able to attend his wake and give you a big hug. What a wonderful married life you shared together and what great memories you will always have. Take care, Dianne Shepherd

Hi Sally: Even belatedly you and Cathy are in our thoughts and prayers. Surely God makes no mistakes as you and the family loved Bob but God loved him best. Bob was such a cool fellow with his jokes and all. I think he really wanted me to loosen up as he like you thought I was always too serious (^: Lucille and I lost touch with you guys over the years but we just wanted to reach out to you and the family in our thoughts and prayers.
