Ronald “Ron” Leon Speirs, beloved husband, father, uncle and friend to many, passed away peacefully September 22nd, 2024, surrounded by friends and family.

He was born August 4th, 1941 to Floyd Adam Speirs and Mary Alice Speirs, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Ron was the youngest of two; his older sister Marlene, who he was very close to throughout their lives.

From a young age, Ron was a gregarious and inquisitive individual, and he had a knack for many things related to electrical, technical, mathematics, music, chemistry, and photography. He graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and had a prosperous career as an Electrical Engineer for several companies.

He was sealed to Judith Jensen in the Salt Lake Temple on April 14, 1967. They lived the first seven years in Tempe, Arizona and then returned to Salt Lake City where they remained to be closer to friends and family, and where they also raised their son, Daland.

A life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Ron served a two year mission to Toronto, Ontario Canada. Beyond that, he served in many capacities including stake clerk, bishopric, emergency communications specialist, teacher, and high priest group leader. His most notable positions were that of music callings. He served in nearly every ward he was in as organist and was routinely seen as having no hymnbook or sheet music on the music rack, as he played nearly all hymns from memory.

In his leisure time, Ron enjoyed several hobbies and recreational activities. Ron enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and riding his motorcycle in the summer months. Southern Utah’s red-rock country was one of his favorites, as well as the pristine Wasatch and High-Uintah mountains, of which he loved to photograph. Ron was an accomplished skier and he enjoyed many years of that with his son. Furthering his love of photography, he operated his own darkroom, in which he processed his own film, and made his own prints. He also transitioned into digital photography where he helped many friends and family in restoring and printing historical family photos.
He was an avid amateur radio operator and used his Electrical Engineering skills to further his advancement into the hobby, building a respectable “Ham Shack” in his basement, and helping others. He also served in the local radio club for many years as historian.
His love of gardening provided the family with various vegetables, fruits, and herbs that were enjoyed throughout the year.

He is survived by his wife Judy, Son Daland, several nieces and nephews, and many family and friends. He is preceded in death by his sister Marlene (Wardell), father Floyd, mother Mary, many aunts and uncles, and others before him.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to family, friends, and Quality Hospice, and the many medical professionals who cared for Ron.
