Royce Roosendaal

Royce Roosendaal passed away peacefully on November 16, 2011, at the age of 80 years.  Royce was born and raised in Garland, Utah and lived most of his life in Salt Lake City where he owned and operated several restaurants.  With a wonderful sense of humor and a quick wit, he could have anyone laughing in short order.  He loved and lived life to the fullest.  He especially loved Royce’s Restaurant and his many friends and customers.  One of his greatest passions was golf.  And he often said “I don’t ever want a funeral – I couldn’t bear having the guys come off the golf course!”  He treated everyone the same, both rich and poor, and touched the lives of many people with his warm smile, kindness, and generosity.  Royce cared deeply for his family and many friends.

Many thanks to Keith and Joy Crockett, Carl Hulbert, Bill and Glenna Pizza, John Cowley, BethAnn McDonald, Bob and Julie Sansom, Judy and Phil Arlt, Wayne Peters, Troy Granger, Jeff Miller, Ted and Nancy Miller, Keri Slama, George Souval, the Foote family, Judy Stone, Troy Wilson, Andrea Miller, Heather Ingham, Norma Jean, Elro, Roy and Nancy, and the wonderful caregivers at CareSource.

Royce is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 55 years, Phyllis; sister Marilynn; brother Keith and his wife Joy Crockett; son Kyle and his wife Lori; son Kevin; his grandchildren Chase; Kara and her husband Nic and their daughter Kaylee; and Ryan and his wife Mandy.

A private funeral service will be held for the immediate family only.  The family requests that memorial donations be made to the National Parkinson Research Foundation.

I want to send my sympathies to your Family we recently lost our Mother. She was a past employee of your restaurant, Trudi Anzer. We have been cleaning out her home and found a couple of painting of Royce that she has been storing since you closed the restaurant. If you would like to have those painting please let me know and we can arrange for a pick-up.

Dear Phyllis, Kyle and Kevin I hope you still get these messages. Though I have lost touch with the years, I have always considered you all family. Royce took me on as his caddy when I was thirteen years old, just after my father had died. He promised me a job at Royce's at 15, which led to a career in the restaurant business. I have now owned my second restaurant for sixteen years. Over twenty years ago I began a journey as a writer of novels. Strength and Grace, my first book, which released a month ago, was conceived on a five-week trip and 5000 miles of driving in Mexico. Fifteen years and eleven rewrites later, I had my first polished novel. I had also fallen hopelessly in love with the art of writing. The last seven years I have found myself in a zone every artist dreams to discover. A place where the connection to art is so profound that the ups and downs of life only add a rich depth to the artwork—rather than a harmful distraction. My third novel, to be released in 2016 is named Omar T in Monterey. This is a start to a series of Novels with Omar, each in a different location (the second is in San Diego). Omar's family restaurant, Royce's is named after Royce, honoring your family's influence on my life. The advance copy will be available soon. It details the connection to the name Royce in both the beginning acknowledgements and the ending glossary. By the end of 2016 I expect to have ten completed works of fiction, including more Omar T books. My wife passed away a year and a half ago, which has dedicated me even more to my art of writing. My mistress, my Apple Macbook Air, has become such a part of my life that I have named her (Zoe). I do hope this message makes its way to you and that you are all in good health. Please pass on contact information so that I can keep you informed of my writing and especially the book that never would have been written, if it wasn't for Royce and all of you. Blessings and love to you and all the members of your family. Deamer Dunn, 435 Pajaro St., Salinas CA 93901, deamer@artbz.bz, (831) 783-1235.

Dear Phyl. Kyle, and Kevin: I just ran across this today, and thought I’d put in my 2cents worth. So many memories of Royce. Shaggin balls for him, Cadding for him, and then working on highland drive at Royce’s. Later on playing golf with him in the Dunn game. We always won when Royce was my partner. The worlds best short game. Someone once asked me if you had to bet your life on an 8 foot putt who would you want to do it. Hands down Royce. I hope you three are well. Love, Tony
