Sally Marie Convery Ivers, of Park City, Utah, died on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at age 93.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, August 19, 1931, to Robert B. and Elinore Convery. Sally grew up a curious, happy and talkative child – the youngest of two in her family. She was known to spend hours in conversation with the many first-generation immigrant neighbors on St. Claire Avenue (few of whom spoke English).
She attended Dominican High School in Detroit, a highly disciplined institution where the resident nuns did their best to direct Sally’s boundless energy. Prior to attending the University of Michigan Sally held jobs ranging from doctor’s assistant to modeling.
After two years in Ann Arbor, she joined United Airlines as a stewardess on cross-country DC-3 flights during which she characteristically struck up conversations with luminaries that included Eleanor Roosevelt and Ella Fitzgerald. It was this career that brought her (somewhat unwillingly) to Salt Lake City where she met her to-be husband, Thomas Ivers, on the steps of the Cathedral of the Madeleine. They were married in Detroit on December 29, 1954.
While raising her four children in Salt Lake, Sally was an untiring volunteer as a member of the Junior League and the ‘Candy Stripers’—with particular devotion to the elderly.
Sally’s husband Tom suffered an untimely death in 1973. Several years later she married Tom’s oldest brother Jim Ivers, whose wife Katherine had also died at an early age. Sally and Jim moved to Park City, Utah permanently in 1985.
She made significant contributions to Park City’s evolution through her role with the Kimball Arts Center and her strong guidance in the design and construction of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Snyderville.
She maintained a love of travel, adventure and fun throughout her life and in her last two decades could claim to have ridden an elephant in India and traveled alone to Dubai.
Sally’s most notable characteristic was an infectious optimism that was truly inspiring. As such she was unfailingly supportive as a mother, grandmother or friend. This was complimented by a wry sense of humor (inherited from her father) which she maintained until the end.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands Tom Ivers and Jim Ivers, and her sister Lynn Kolowich. She is survived by her four children, Thomas Ivers (Catherine), Matthew Ivers (Janet), Lynn Cier (Andy) and Patrick Ivers (Sally O.) who often called her ‘BGM’ (beautiful, gorgeous mother – another story); many nieces and nephews; grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many others who knew and loved her as ‘Grandma Sally’.
Rosary, Thursday, May 29, 2025, 5-7 PM, St. Mary’s Old Town Chapel, Park City. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, May 30, 2025, at 1 PM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Snyderville. Interment to follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Cross Ministries.
