Sister Julia M. Maher, SFCC

July 2, 1930 - December 24, 2025

Sister Julia M. Maher, SFCC, daughter of James Bernard Maher and Julia Hearley Maher, died December 24, 2025.

Born on July 2, 1930 in Salt Lake City, Utah, Sister Julie attended grammar and high school at Judge Memorial Catholic School, 

Sister Julie earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Art at St. Mary of the Wasatch, Salt Lake City, Utah, a Master’s Degree in Art from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana and a Master of Religious Education from Seattle University, Seattle, Washington.  Julie completed training for the Ministry of Religious Healing sponsored by the Utah Institute of Christian Ministry and was a member of the National Association of Catholic Chaplains.

A lifelong participant in the Catholic religious community, Sister Julie was a member of the Catholic Order of the Sisters of the Holy Cross (CSC) for 23 years and a member of the Sisters for Christian Community (SFCC) for 33 years.

Sister Julie was a talented artist and shared her work with many. An accomplished chess player, Sister Julie shared her considerable expertise with many nieces and nephews.  Her long work career spanned the roles of artist, grammar and high school teacher and religious care giver for those who suffered personal and spiritual loss.  

Sister Julie taught high school art at St. Mary’s of the Wasatch High School, and later served as a chaplain in several organizations, including Good Shepherd Home Care in Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake City Veteran’s Administration Hospital and the Utah State Hospital. Sister Julie served as Director of Marillac House, a transitional housing program for homeless women and families managed by Catholic Community Services in Salt Lake City.  Sister Julie later founded and managed the Holy Spirit House of Prayer in Salt Lake City before retirement. 

Sister Julie is predeceased by her parents, sisters Mary, Norinne, Bernice and brother Jim.  She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews across the United States.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 7, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 670 South 1100 East, Salt Lake City.  Interment to follow at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 4th Ave & “T” Street.

The Family of Rev. Sr. Julie, Maher, Please, accept my heartfelt sympathy of the passing to glory of our beloved Rev. Sr. Julie Maher. May her gentle and kind soul rest in perfect peace with the LORD. May He succor you all. She will be truly missed. She had anointing to heal; when she prays, God hears. I have experienced it first hand several times. She was instrumental in a lot of things to get things done when I came to Utah. Helped raise funds to run a school in Nigeria using my first children's book. Appreciation of the Mass and the Eucharist. Rev. Sr. JulieMaher, rest in perfect peace. Adieu!!!
