Stephen Elwyn Chilton
November 19, 1947 - April 12, 2023
On November 19, 1947, Stephen Elwyn Chilton was born in the Ray Arizona hospital. At that moment the world became a better place. He would grow up to become a dedicated and loving husband, father and grandfather.
He lived in Superior, Arizona with his parents Gerald and Maxine Chilton, spent time growing up there and spent summers at the family cabin at Pine Top, Arizona with his parents, brother and sister.
He then attended Wasatch Academy in Mt. Pleasant, Utah.
After graduation he enrolled at Northern Arizona University, transferred to Arizona State University, and then received his Masters at the Thunderbird School of Economics.
In 1985, Steve worked with Jim Laub of Cache Valley Electric to start the Salt Lake City Branch of CVE in the Valley Bank Building downtown. Soon after, he hired three employees and the Company kept getting larger from there. Steve became a Vice President. CVE’s Electrical Construction Department got contracts for Primary Children’s Hospital, Huntsman Cancer Institute, Kennecott Copper Facilities and many more buildings across Northern Utah under his direction. He also helped create multiple CVE departments including Teledata, Design Build, Service and more.
Steve was driven by ethics and dedication to building and giving new opportunities to those who shared the same. He respected his employees and they respected him.
He was also involved with the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) and became a Vice President for the 8th district. He served as Chair for many of the Committees and received many awards over the years from NECA.
Steve dealt with MS and heart issues which made it difficult to continue working, so he retired in 2013 after 28 years of service. Steve and Peggy loved to travel, taking many trips over the years to a special place; Paris. They took thirty-five trips to their beloved City. They also fell in love with Italy. They took many trips all over Europe.
Steve enjoyed Sun Valley, Idaho spending summers and falls there after retirement.
He loved his daughter Katherine and enjoyed spending time with his granddaughters Alexandra and Samantha who always made him smile whenever they were present.
It is with grief and sadness that we say goodbye to him. His life was shortened by an aggressive cancer. Treatable but not curable. He is at last not suffering. We are. He has made all of us stronger and better people because of his influence. He was a humble man that never craved attention. Steve was a giant in the industry. He will never be forgotten.
Steve is survived by his wife Peggy, his daughter Katherine (Judge) Evans, granddaughters Alexandra, Samantha; brother Gerald (Glenda), Sister Peggy Closky, nieces, nephews and cousins. Also survived by Katherine’s Mother, Susan.
Rest my love. Wait for me and I will be seeing you.
A celebration of life is planned for Friday April 28, 2023 from 6-9 PM at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East. Guests are encouraged to use the parking and entrance on the north side of the building.
