Steven Leigh Hope
October 16, 1955 - October 22, 2025
Steven Leigh Hope, 70, passed away on October 22, 2025, from Multiple Myeloma. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Steve spent most of his life in Salt Lake City before retiring to Charleston, South Carolina.
Steve worked as a surveyor for the Bureau of Land Management, a role that suited him perfectly. He was happiest outdoors — exploring wide landscapes, studying the details of the land, and finding beauty in places many might overlook. He was an exceptional skier and fisherman, and he spent much of his life mountain biking, camping, backpacking, and kayaking. The outdoors was not just where he spent his time, but where he found his peace.
Those who knew Steve remember his warm and easy way with people. He made friends effortlessly and genuinely. He was kind, funny, and steady — with a streak of stubbornness that those closest to him recognized with love.
Steve is survived by his wife, Jill Woodworth, and his daughter, Maggie Hope, his brother Joe, sister Susan and extended family. He is deeply loved and will be profoundly missed.
Friends are invited to celebrate his life on Saturday, April 18, 2026 from 5:00-7:00PM at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City. Guests are encouraged to use the main parking and entrance on the north side of the building.
In Loving Memory
Steve was a light for those around him and those fellow multiple myeloma patients fighting to live. He gave freely of his time in helping those in need of hope, clarity, and compassion. His book brought hope to patients and families wanting more time. I feel blessed knowing this kind spirit and lucky enough to take care of him up at Huntsman. I'm sure he's out and about doing what he loves wherever he is. Please take comfort in that. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this trying time.

We lived across the street on Village Circle, (SLC) and Steve, Jill and Maggie were wonderful neighbors. Both of us eventually moved away from Village Circle, but we will always remember this happy and beautiful family that made great neighbors. Rest in Peace, Steve.

Steve was one of my first mentors on the Wasatch Cache boundary line survey crew. Steve was the consummate Land Surveyor, intelligent, professional, and always willing to share his knowledge, and we had fun as well. We later worked together in the Utah Bureau of Land Management Cadastral Survey Division. Steve was widely respected by cadastral surveyors nationwide for his expertise. Steve was kind, caring and always interested in you as an individual. I can still see him with his beloved dog Sadie, happily working and playing in the forest. The good old days! Rest in Peace, fellow traveler!

I first met Steve in the early 1990's when hired at the Utah State Office, Bureau of Land Management, GCDB Program. I considered him a good friend ever since then. While he, Jill and Maggie lived in Salt Lake City we got together as friends and work mates often. Riding bikes, skiing and playing volleyball depending on the season. After they moved, Steve called me to keep in touch, which I appreciated very much. I was very shocked to hear he had passed away as he fought his illness for so many years, I just figured he'd just keep carrying on. My deepest condolences to his family and may he be resting in peace now.
