Stormy Lupus

February 8, 1943 - May 5, 2013

Alfred David Lupus

"Stormy"

We lost our handsome and fun-loving Stormy on May 5, 2013, after a battle with Parkinson's Disease.  "Bumpa" or "Grandpa" as the grankids called him was born on February 8, 1943 in Salt Lake City to Alfred and Isabelle George Lupus.

His family moved to Orem, Utah in 1946.  Growing up in Utah County provided many opportunities for time with friends, playing baseball, swimming in the canal, riding bikes, shooting hoops and playing HORSE.  Stormy did have to help out on the family farm, picking tomatoes, peaches and cherries.  He liked to tell about "road trips" with his dad, Al, selling peaches on the side of the road on their way to Blythe, CA where they would buy a truckload of cantaloupe and sell them on the roadside as they worked their way back to Utah.  These experiences primed Stormy for his later career in sales.  The grandkids have been the joy of his life the past 13 years.  Derek, Brandon, Venice and Kai.  He would use his "Donald Duck" voice with them and they would try to mimic it but they still need some work.  They also referred to him as "Cookie Monster" as he would say "me want cookie…give me cookie yum yum!"

Stormy graduated from Orem High School in 1961.  He graduated from the University of Utah in 1968 with a major in Geography.  That led to a teaching career in middle school for several years.  His brother-in-law, Mike, kept telling Stormy that he should be in sales and arranged for him to have an interview with NCH Corporation in Dallas.  Careers changed quickly as Stormy began selling welding materials for Xergon in 1974.  He enjoyed sales and was very successful, rated as the #1 sales person in the company for 10 years.  He retired in 2009.  Stormy and his wife, Carol, were very fortunate to have traveled widely, spent many years boating at Lake Powell with their sons and friends, also loving camping, fishing and hunting.  Snow skiing was his passion and he was an awesome powder skier.  Alta was his "other home" for many years.  Golf was the warm weather sport.  After retirement he was fortunate enough to become a "marshall" at River Oaks Golf Course.  Thanks to those at Sandy City Parks and Rec who guided him along the way.

Stormy is survived by his wife Carol who he married in 1964; sons Jeff (Gloria) and Jason (Noelle); grandkids Derek, Brandon, Venice and Kai; sisters Lawana (Pat) Clinton, Sharon (Mike) Foley, Kathy (Brent) Reynolds, and Greg (Renae).  He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Colleen.  Stormy cherished the extraordinary support and love from his family.

A special thanks to Inspiration Hospice and to his private caregivers Elizabeth, Lidia, and Roger.  Also thanks to his friends who have been so great to visit, take him out for lunch or for a drive.  Thanks to all of our very dear and incredible friends for your love and support…you know who you are.

A wake will be held on Friday, May 10th from 6 to 8 PM at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City.  A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, May 11th at 10:00 AM at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 3015 E. Creek Road, Cottonwood Heights.  Urn burial to follow at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East 10600 South, Sandy.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation for Parkinson's Research to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, at www.michaeljfox.org or you may call 1-800-708-7644.

Dear Carol: We are so sorry for your loss. We remember the wonderful times we had with you both and the Foleys at the weddings here in Kingwood. Sharon and I had the greatest respect for Stormy. He was a very classy guy. Probably my fondest remembrance of Stormy is the day I got a phone call from someone as I was walking through Costco on a Sunday morning, asking if my Corvette was still available for sale. I said yes. He then said he wanted to see it. Then I said "Is this Stormy Lupus"? He was quiet for a few seconds, and I said "Stormy, this is John Ragsdale". He and Carol came up that afternoon and bought the car. I know how much he loved and cared for that Red Corvette and we are happy to know it brought him so much enjoyment. Rest well, Stormy!! Our sincere condolences to Carol and all of Stormy's family.

To a great inspiration and mentor during my 30 years with NCH. He and Carol were always the first to ask when and where the big party was at all the sales meetings. Stormy, you did a great job duplicating yourself with Jason & Jeff, and you should be proud. Well like the Greeks say "MAY YOUR MEMORY BE ETERNAL" Manny & Valerie Kanas

I am sorry for your loss. Stormy was a gentleman. One of my fondest memories was of him standing up for me at an X-Ergon meeting. The information being presented was incorrect and I spoke up. He had my back when the presenter tried to say I was wrong. Just the sort of man Stormy was - a champion!

it at least a dozen times to friends kids these days were just made dtrfefenily. I believe in some form of evolution and that it's apparent to me that children are being born more and more technologically advanced.I saw a clip on YouTube once of a little girl no more than 2 years of age playing with an iPad and using it correctly, and yet she didn't understand what to do with a magazine. She kept trying to swipe her fingers across it and touch the images as she would using the iPad. I think that video speaks volumes in reference to my claims. While we're seemingly being born more technologically advanced, I do have concerns that we're dumbing down . On the one hand, it's amazing to see a child pick up what we consider to be an extremely advanced piece of technology and use it. On the other hand, it's considered advanced technology specifically for its ease of use. So who's to say if it's really positive or negative in that case?Still, I found the article to be incredibly moving. It touched my heart and I believe such technology is best spent on children with special needs. They are the ones who need it not us folks who are just kind of lazy. *grins*
